I’ve been a powerline user since the first inception of network over electrical circuits, and started out with a set of Billion AV devices under the original INT chipset (having tried many others from Belkin to Devolo), I was lucky in places to see 50Mbps and at best in later AV200 product revisions maybe 135Mbps at a push where they are on the same floor without passing through the consumer unit, but typically depending on placement as low as 35Mbps.

Of course my house is running Cat5e throughout, but for wireless devices due to an extension on the outside of the original wall, wi-fi signal has been historically very poor, so I use these now to prop up my wireless setup and run the other powerline in the same room as my server/NAS/router and have it connected through a layer 3 switch.

I do feel they are a tad expensive, but I can honestly say, having now moved to the TPLink product I am not disappointed, connection over powerline has been a consistent 450Mbps – 470Mbps, and more recently moving the wireless AP to a central location in the house 800Mbps+ point to point.

I was amazed how effective these are – in my particular situation and set-up. I had my doubts but I now have a very good wifi set-up in my cabin which is at least 180 feet (about 60m) from my main router. It’s plugged into my downstairs mains ring circuit at one end, and at the other end of a long armoured cable run (50m) to the cabin. It’s been running for months and I’ve had no issues at all. The proof will be in the pudding when I finally try a Smart TV down in the cabin. In fact, thinking about it, the boys had their friends over and Netflix worked perfectly. My teenage boys are happy so it must be good!
