Everything you need to know about Doctor Foster season 3

Contains spoilers for Doctor Foster seasons one and two.

Doctor Foster is one of the most iconic British TV series of recent years, so it’s no wonder many fans are calling for a third season.

Season one of the show followed the breakdown of a marriage between GP Dr Gemma Foster (Suranne Jones) and businessman Simon (Bertie Carvel) due to his affair with the much younger Kate (Jodie Comer.)

The nation quickly became enthralled by fiery Gemma and invested in how her marital breakdown affected her teenage son Tom (Tom Taylor.)

Season two took the estranged couple-drama to a whole other level and the series explored how far Gemma and Simon would go to come out victorious over their ex. The series had us on the edge of our seats thanks to some nerve-wracking scenes and the tension came to a sad end when in the final episode of series two, young Tom was found to be missing.

Suranne Jones has won a BAFTA for her role in Doctor Foster and the series as a whole was nominated for one of the prestigious awards, so given that – will creator Mike Bartlett write a third series?

Doctor Foster season 3 – Is it happening?

While nothing had been confirmed yet, Writer Mike Bartlett has spoken about potential storylines for season three.

He told Radio Times: “Tom’s gone. So there’s a question mark… Clearly there’s potential there.

But obviously there would have to be lots of conversations. “We need to talk – Suranne and I and lots of other people need to have lots of conversations and we’ll see,” he added. MORE: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LINE OF DUTY SEASON 5

In another conversation with Radio Times, Bartlett elaborated: “That ending of series two leaves a lot open to come back to: where has the son Tom gone and what’s happening to him? What happens to the parents?

That’s the sort of story territory we’d be in, but it’s not written yet.”

He added that while he thinks the BBC (which airs Doctor Foster) “would rather I did something new” he is still considering bringing the show back.

“If we do bring Doctor Foster back it will only thrive if we do it at the right time,” he said. MORE: MARCELLA SEASON 3: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW Everything you need to know about Doctor Foster season 3

Speaking about the potential third season, Suranne Jones told Radio Times:

“Obviously I want Tom to come home for her… I think it would be nice if they rectified their relationship. I don’t know what her and Simon’s relationship would be, but it would be nice for her and Tom to rectify that.”

Doctor Foster season 3 – when would it be back? There’s no word about when Gemma Foster and co could be back. Series one aired on the BBC in 2015 while series two hit screens in 2017.

If that pattern is anything to go by, maybe we should be marking our diaries for 2019 if series three is confirmed? For now, we wait… MORE: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VICTORIA SEASON 3
