According to the yachtsman Sir Ben Ainslie, Sir Charles Dunstone was “incredibly gracious” when the telecoms tycoon and his fellow knight Sir Keith Mills made way last year for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to bankroll Britain’s America’s Cup team.

In his business life, Dunstone is a less likely candidate to leave the wheel — however rocky the seas become.

The 54-year-old, whose fortune was valued at £918m in last year’s Sunday Times Rich List, is seeking calmer waters for his broadband operator TalkTalk, whose shares have sunk 67% over the past five years as it has been weighed down by debts of £760m.
