Apple's iMessage is the glue that keeps users stuck to the iPhone.

Jason Cipriani/CNET

Android phones do many things well, but when it comes to texting, the iPhone has Google beat. Apple's iMessage app supports group messaging and read receipts, and has that addictive blue bubble that automatically texts other iPhone users over Wi-Fi, not just your cellular data connection. The fact that Android phone makers use different messaging apps by default keeps the act of texting from becoming as indispensable as iMessage is to iPhone users.

Google wants to change all that, and is working with US carriers to make text messaging more powerful, more consistent across Android phones and more fun to use. It will take work, though, namely getting carriers to adopt a messaging protocol called RCS.

Here's a look at what RCS is and does, what it'll give you and when you might be able to start using it on your Android phone.

Stop being jealous of iMessage. What you need to know about Android's fancy texting update

Now playing: Watch this: Google's RCS wants to mimic iMessage's magic with Android...

What does RCS mean?

RCS is a type of messaging protocol that stands for Rich Communication Services. When it's widely available, it will replace SMS, the text messaging standard that's been used since the 1990's.  SMS messaging has evolved some over the years, expanding past the original 160 character limit and adding MMS (multimedia messaging) for sending pictures and videos.

However, SMS is starting to show its age and limitations. RCS would allow texting on Android to be as flexible and powerful as text message platforms like WhatsApp and WeChat, for example.

Group messaging gets a whole lot better with RCS messaging.

How will RCS make texting better?

The biggest change is that RCS messaging will let you share high-resolution photos, videos, GIFs and texts over Wi-Fi as well as over your phone's data connection. You'll be able to see if contacts are available, when they're typing to you and when they've read a message.

Group conversations will also see improvements.  It's basically iMessage, but for Android.  Google has an entire website dedicated to explaining the benefits of RCS messaging if you want to get into the finer details.

What other features will RCS have?

Once RCS messaging becomes more prominent, you'll be able to chat with businesses to place and track orders, make payments and get help with a product.

Business chat is something that Apple's iMessage platform currently has, but bringing a similar feature to Android users is a welcome addition.

How RCS texting will work on Android phones

If you have a phone and use a wireless carrier that supports RCS (more on this in a minute) you should only need to open Google's Messages app and follow the prompts when asked if you want to use chat features.  After chat is enabled, you can continue to use the Messages app as you normally do, but whenever you're talking to someone who also has the feature turned on, you'll get the added features of RCS messaging.  Some device-makers, like Samsung, have integrated Google's RCS platform into its own default Messages app, and over time companies like LG could do the same.

But right now, your best bet is to use Google's Messages app. Doing so will give you the added benefit of being able to send text messages from your computer, and you'll receive an alert whenever RCS messaging is available for your phone and carrier.

If your carrier supports RCS, Google's Messages app will have settings for the chat feature.

Jason Cipriani/CNET

I have Google's Messages installed but don't have RCS. Why?

This is where RCS gets messy.

In order for RCS to work, your phone and your wireless carrier both have to support it. Unfortunately, it's not as simple as Google releasing an app, you installing it, and then gaining access to the new features.  We've seen a number of announcements and partnerships from Google, Android device makers, and even carriers that RCS is finally going to roll out.

But the truth is, only a small number of phones on an even smaller list of carriers currently support it. Which carriers and phones work with RCS texting now?  Right now, there are a few phones and carriers that support it, but it's very hit or miss.  Verizon added RCS support for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL and intended to support the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, but that's where the fun stopped.

In 2018, Google and Samsung announced a partnership to bring RCS messaging to more Android devices, but without carrier support, it doesn't mean much.  Adding to the confusion are companies like Verizon, whose Message+ text messaging app supports RCS, but doesn't use Google's Universal Profile. So, if you're a Verizon customer who uses Message+, you can use the RCS spinoff as long as you're chatting with another Verizon user who is also using Message+.

There are some carriers that support Google's RCS Universal Profile and you can use RCS on right now, such as Sprint and Google Fi. Outside of the US, Google enabled RCS for the UK and France in July of 2019.  If you aren't sure if your carrier supports it, GadgetHacks has a fantastic breakdown of carriers and their respective approaches to RCS across the globe.

When will I get RCS messaging on my Android phone? Good question. Right now, it doesn't look like it will be anytime soon.

Especially now that carriers in the US have decided they're going to build out their own messaging platform, with support for Google's Universal Profile, with roll-out taking place sometime in 2020. That means that you may ultimately see an improved messaging experience on your Android phone here in the US, but it could potentially be a fractured or inconsistent experience due to the wireless carriers' implementation.  We're following the story and will update this FAQ as development arise.

Until then, the only thing we can do is wait.

Samsung's Messages app supports RCS, as well.

Angela Lang/CNET

What about RCS on my iPhone?

Apple has kept quiet about its intention for supporting RCS on the iPhone. But it's much more likely that Apple will keep using its own iMessage platform to make iPhone users feel like they're part of a rarified community.

How to use RCS right now regardless of your carrier, with a catch

Reddit users figured out a way to enable RCS on any Android phone, regardless of carrier. If anything, it proves that Google could turn on RCS messaging for all Android users without carrier approval.

Google's unlikely to risk alienating its valuable business partners. The process is somewhat technical, but the instructions are straight-forward. Keep in mind that you're accepting some risk by trying it out, and the program could stop working at any moment.

That's the nature of the beast.

If you're tired of standard text messaging, check out these messaging apps that offer their own iMessage-like features.

Then again, you could always jump ship to iPhone -- it's not as hard as you'd think

Hopefully, we see mass adoption of RCS messaging sooner than later.

Best TV deals for Black Friday 2019 available now (and coming soon) Sun, 10 Nov 2019 12:22:03 +0000

Sarah Tew/CNET

Black Friday 2019, let's face it, is all about the TV deals. Sure Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Amazon and the rest have plenty of other gadgets and devices on sale, from phones to vacuum cleaners, but you'll really have a great holiday season if you clean up on one the best TVs of 2019. Black Friday may be best known for doorbuster deals on dirt-cheap sets, but smart TV shoppers know that it's also price drop season on TVs that are actually good -- including LG's 2019 OLED models and TCL Roku TVs.

Below I've gathered the best Black Friday TV deals so far.

Unless noted otherwise, the deals are all available now. I'll update this list with the latest deals going forward -- and I expect that to happen A LOT. For now, dig in.

Best TV deals for Black Friday 2019 available now (and coming soon) Sarah Tew/CNET

A bigger version of the 3-Series with a similar story: Roku's great smart TV system built-in, but this time with 4K HDR compatibility.

Again, the picture quality is no great shakes, but this price is good enough (the lowest this year so far) you can probably overlook that.  Read our TCL 50S425 Roku TV review. Samsung dropped the prices on all of its QLED TVs for Black Friday, and the Q70 series is our favorite value of the bunch. It's the cheapest with full-array local dimming (FALD), the best feature for improving image quality.

FALD-equipped TCL and Vizio models have similar image quality for hundreds less, but Samsung has a leg up in design. Read our Samsung Q70 series (2019) review. LG's traditional pre-Black Friday OLED TV price drop is on, and our favorite high-end TV for the money, the B9, gets a steep discount. OLED TVs produce better overall image quality than any LCD we've reviewed, including Samsung's QLED TVs.

LG's 2019 versions also have more features than its previous OLED TVs, including Alexa built-inApple AirPlay 2 and more HDMI 2.1 extras, including eARC, Auto Game mode and Variable Refresh rate.  The C9 is also on sale, but it's a bit more expensive than the B9 for slightly better image quality. Your call. Read our LG OLEDB9PUA series review.

We haven't reviewed this Sony but expect it to perform similarly to the LG B9: In a word: awesome.

Just like the LG, this is the lowest price yet for a current-year OLED TV (the 65-inch Sony is also £2,000).

Unlike the LG, Sony uses the screen to produce sound and offers Google's Android TV operating system. Read more.

Skip Black Friday and Cyber Monday with this anytime Amazon shopping hack Sun, 10 Nov 2019 12:00:07 +0000

Amazon houses thousands of discounted items in a secret online store where it liquidates customer returns and merchandise with damaged packaging at fractions of their retail prices.

Sarah Tew/CNET

If pushing through Black Friday crowds and waiting for Cyber Monday countdown sales make Thanksgiving weekend shopping sound like more trouble than it's worth, you're going to love this Amazon shopping hack you can use any day of the year. I routinely shave off anywhere from just a few pennies to over 70% from the retail price of practically everything I buy on Amazon, all year long, by looking for the item I want on Amazon Warehouse Deals

The only catch is that Amazon doesn't always make it easy to find these discounted listings, so you'll have to learn what to look for. In fact, sometimes it can be so tricky to figure out if an item you want to buy is available through Amazon Warehouse that it almost seems like Amazon is hiding it on purpose.

That's why I'm going to help navigate you through the labyrinth of Amazon listings and show you how to drill down until you find the best deal. Once you master this hack, you'll never want to pay full retail price on any Amazon item again.

Whether you're on mobile or desktop, if you know how to find Amazon Warehouse Deals you can save up to 70% off a retail price.

James Martin/CNET

How to browse Amazon Warehouse Deals

If you're not in the market for anything in particular -- say you're just looking for gift ideas or killing time during your lunch break -- you can get to the Amazon Warehouse Deals landing page by heading to and searching for "Amazon Warehouse" or "Warehouse Deals." From there you can browse the categorized listings just as you would at any online retailer.

How to find specific items from Amazon Warehouse

If you're anything like me, 99% of the time I shop on Amazon I know exactly what I'm looking for. If you already have something specific in mind but want to see if there's a discounted Amazon Warehouse option available, this is where your sleuthing skills come into play.

At the bottom of the box, click the link that reads, "Used & new (20) from £121.79" to get the discounted Amazon Warehouse listings for this item.

Screenshot by Dale Smith/CNET

First, pull up the item you want to buy just as you normally would on Amazon, but don't add it to your cart just yet.

Scour the page, keeping your eyes peeled for words like "New & Used," "Buy Used,"  "New & Used Offers" or just plain "Used."  Usually there'll be a price listed too, representing the cheapest option available (but not including tax or shipping costs). If you're not having any luck finding the link, try using your browser's "find" function (usually Control-F on Windows and Command-F on Macs) to look for these keywords.

Once you locate the link, look for items with "Amazon Warehouse" listed as the seller and an Amazon Prime logo displayed near the price. If Amazon Warehouse has more than one of the same item in stock, there will sometimes be a separate listing for each, especially if the items are in different conditions.

Why Amazon Warehouse stuff is so cheap

Just like other major retailers such as Walmart or Target, Amazon takes in a lot of customer returns, which it can no longer sell as new-in-box, regardless of why the buyer sent the item back or whether it's even been opened.  That's why everything Amazon Warehouse sells is listed as used, even if the product itself has never been touched.

Regardless of its condition, used stuff is just worth less -- sometimes a lot less. And that's good for you.

What to do when you get a lemon

Of the dozens (if not hundreds) of Amazon Warehouse listings I've bought over the years, I only ever ran into problems with a handful of them -- a Bluetooth adapter for my car that would randomly shut off, a wireless router that didn't broadcast any signal, a very well-worn puppy harness with dog hair stuck to it; stuff like that.

Don't throw away those Amazon boxes just yet -- if you do happen to receive an item that's broken or doesn't work, you'll need to return it to Amazon.

Claudia Cruz/CNET

Whenever that happens, I just return the item like I would any defective product, then order another one. Sure, it's a bit more hassle, but considering the hundreds, if not thousands of dollars I've saved over the years this way, it's worth the extra effort.

Truth is, most Amazon Warehouse items are in perfect working order -- many haven't even been so much as pulled out of their packages yet, like the Ring 2 Doorbell I got for £65 (it retails for £139) or the Baby Trend stroller I paid £81 for instead of £105. Even for stuff that has been taken out of the box, Amazon puts everything through what the company calls a "rigorous 20-point inspection process," after which each item is given a quality grade and priced accordingly.  Some items may have cosmetic damage or be missing parts, accessories, instructions or assembly tools, but Amazon will detail any damage to the product or packaging, as well as any missing element along with the condition, so you won't be surprised.

For example, I knew when I ordered a 100-watt Pyle amplifier for £29 that the accessories were loose and the amp would come repackaged. Who cares? I saved £15.

The different quality grades and what they mean

Amazon has five different grades it assigns to items it resells.

Here they are with brief explanations of what Amazon means by them. Renewed: This is the highest grade an Amazon Warehouse item can receive and is on par with what other companies might call "refurbished." Renewed items have been closely inspected and tested and determined to look and function like new and come with a 90-day replacement or refund guarantee. The "refreshed" Roku Express Plus I ordered had never even been opened.

The Amazon Warehouse listing for this product in Good condition costs £121.79.

The same item in Very Good condition costs almost £7 more. Either option, however, is better than paying £164.99 for it brand-new.

Screenshot by Dale Smith/CNET

Used, Like New: No noticeable blemishes or marks on the item itself, although the packaging may be damaged, incomplete or missing all together. All accessories are included, and any damage to the package will be described in the listing.

The box for the Like New Evenflo locking gate I saved £6 on was a little banged up, but I've seen way worse on Walmart's shelves. The gate itself was flawless. Used, Very Good: Item has been lightly used, with minor visible indications of wear and tear, but otherwise in good working order.

Packaging might be damaged, incomplete or the item repackaged. Any missing accessories will be detailed on the listing. I saved £4 on a Very Good Bosch Icon wiper blade that had, like, one scuff on it.

Used, Good: Item shows moderate signs of use, packaging may be damaged or the item repackaged and could be missing accessories, instructions or assembly tools. Another Bosch Icon wiper blade I got was only in Good shape, but I saved £15 on that one, and honestly I can't tell one from the other now that they're on my car. Used, Acceptable: Very well worn, but still fully functional.

Major cosmetic defects, packaging issues and/or missing parts, accessories, instructions or tools. I got an Echo Dot for £23 that was considered Acceptable. I think it has a scratch near the power port, but now it's on my nightstand where it does its job well, and mostly in the dark, for less than half the cost of a new one.

How to choose the right grade

If there are multiple listings with different grades available for the product I want to buy, I think about what I'm going to use it for.

If it were something purely functional and I couldn't care less about its cosmetic condition, like hair clippers or a cordless drill, I'd go with the cheapest option, period.

The Ring 2 video doorbell normally retails for £200. As of early November, Amazon has it discounted to £139, however the Amazon Warehouse price is only £90.

Chris Monroe/CNET

If it's something I'd display, like a kitchen mixer, end table or wall clock, I'd read the descriptions a little more closely and look for items that are rated Very Good or Like New.  But honestly, a low enough price on just about anything can woo me into dealing with some scratches or scuffs.

Not to mention, in my experience, Amazon tends to err on the side of caution, marking items as Good or Acceptable that the average person would consider Very Good or Like New.

Officially no warranty, but your mileage may very

One of the benefits of purchases made through Amazon Warehouse is that Amazon's standard 30-day replacement or refund return policy applies, which comes in handy if you wind up with a lemon. Amazon does caution that because these products are considered used they don't come with the manufacturer's original warranty.

Amazon Echo Dots can usually be had for over 50% off their retail price of £50 when Amazon Warehouse lists them for sale.

Ben Fox Rubin/CNET

That said, if the product hasn't already been registered in someone else's name, there's a decent chance any issues you run into past Amazon's 30-day window can be resolved with a call to the manufacturer.

Amazon Prime members still get free shipping

Subscribing to Amazon Prime won't get you a bigger discount on Amazon Warehouse Deals, but you'll get free shipping just as you would for any other Prime-eligible item, which is why I still pay for Prime even though most of my purchases come from Amazon Warehouse. Most of the stuff I've bought through Amazon Warehouse ships and arrives within the same one- to two-day window I get with new items, although some orders do take longer to fulfill.

If that's the case, the extra handling time is usually indicated on the listing, so I know what to expect.

Amazon Prime members don't get any extra discounts on Amazon Warehouse merchandise, but they still benefit from free and usually pretty fast shipping.

James Martin/CNET

Third-party sellers and other deals

While wading around in the listings looking for Amazon Warehouse Deals you may have discovered even more discounted listings not sold by Amazon. What you've stumbled upon are items sold by third-party retailers whose only relationship with Amazon is that their items are for sale on Amazon's marketplace, much like eBay.  However, Amazon's buyer protections lag considerably behind eBay's. eBay guarantees customers their money back in the event of a dispute, and although Amazon will ultimately do the same, its process is a bit more convoluted, so proceed with caution.

Generally, if I can't find a good enough deal on Amazon Warehouse, I'll tab over to eBay and look for the item there instead. eBay is a little more transparent about both its vendors and the merchandise they sell. If I'm going to buy garage-sale used as opposed to Amazon's never-opened used, I prefer eBay. Of course, Amazon will be participating in this year's big Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales too, with some deals starting as early as Nov.

We've assembled all of this month's Amazon deals in one place here, but if you're looking for deals you can take advantage of today we have a list of all the Amazon deals available right now right here.

But don't limit yourself to just Amazon, when Best Buy's deals are available now, as are sales at Target.

Civilian supersonic: Exploring Concorde and Russia's Tu-144 at the Technik Museum Sinsheim Sun, 10 Nov 2019 12:00:05 +0000

Geoffrey Morrison/CNET

The speed of sound -- 767 miles per hour -- is the kind of rarified velocity reserved for the adventurous few. Military pilots and astronauts come to mind, streaking across the sky in their high-tech tubes of titanium and steel. For a time, though, such speed was available to civilians in the form of the Concorde.

The only supersonic commercial airliner, it covered the distance between Europe and North America in less than half the time of traditional jets.

Civilian supersonic: Exploring Concorde and Russia's Tu-144 at the Technik Museum Sinsheim

Now playing: Watch this: The Soviet TU-144 vs. the British-French Concorde

Not to be outdone by their aviation rivals in the west, the Soviet Union built and briefly flew its own supersonic commercial jet, the Tupolev Tu-144. Sixteen were built and a handful remain. Only one is outside Russia, and it's the star of the show at Germany's Technik Museum Sinsheim.

Mounted above the museum itself, the Tu-144 appears to soar, held back by sturdy metal columns. Behind, as if chasing, there's a French Concorde. While these are worthy attractions in themselves, the museum has a massive collection of other historical aircraft, automobiles, and even tanks.

Here's a look around.

The Russian Concorde

The Tu-144 first flew in 1968, two months before the Concorde. Top speed was an impressive Mach 2.15, slightly faster than the Concorde, and it could carry over 40 more passengers. And it was, by all accounts, a terrible aircraft.

The cabin was so loud passengers had to pass notes. It was notoriously unreliable. Landings were high-speed and hard, and required a drag parachute.

Multiple crashes meant few passengers ever flew on the Tu-144. In 1983 the project was cancelled, though some aircraft were used for a few more years as flying laboratories and to set some speed records. Seeing the Tu-144 today is nearly as impressive as seeing the Soviet Buran space shuttle at Sinsheim's nearby sister museum.

The iconic mustache canards are the first visual clue that this isn't the Concorde. Underneath, the massive Kolesov engines dominate the airframe, making the Concorde's Olympus engines seem svelte by comparison. Inside the earth-tone bins and subdued colors are nothing a western designer would have allowed.

The cabin is surprisingly roomy, however, relative to Concorde anyway. Teal instrument panels make the cockpit the most colorful part of the aircraft.

Geoffrey Morrison/CNET

Tanks, Tupolevs, Heinkels and helos

Sinsheim is the largest privately owned museum in Europe, and one of the largest in the world. There are hundreds of cars, tanks and even trains, not to mention dozens more aircraft.

Two of the other standouts are very rare Heinkel He 111 and Junkers Ju 88 bombers. They were both widely produced during WWII, but only a few remain today. Both inside the museum, and in one of the many outdoor areas, there are German, American and even Russian tanks.

Geoffrey Morrison/CNET

There are also Lamborghinis of the wheeled and tracked varieties, a Vector W8 and more Mercedes, Porches, Ferraris and Bugattis than you can shake a tie rod at.

Sinsheim und Speyer

Technik Museum Sinsheim and Technik Museum Speyer are owned by the same company, and while similar, they offer slightly different experiences.

Though both have a large number of cars and planes, Sinsheim has more cars, while Speyer has more aircraft. That said, the Tu-144 is quite a draw, to some people perhaps more so than the Buran. The museums are about 30 minutes apart by car, though you probably couldn't do both in the same day.

There's just too much to see. Conveniently, there's a gallery above with many of the coolest exhibits, and you can also check out our tour and gallery of Speyer

Even at their normal prices Fire TV Edition TVs are at the lower end of the price scale, ranging from £150 for a 24-inch Insignia 720p HD TV to £450 for a 55-inch Toshiba 4K UHD HDR TV with Dolby Vision.

Black Friday deals come early at Best Buy Sun, 10 Nov 2019 02:20:00 +0000

    Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Black Friday is November 29 -- but Best Buy are kicking off early, in which case it's now. The retailer has started early with a huge sale that includes some of the best deals we've seen of the holiday season thus far. Best Buy are setting the all-time lowest prices on the Apple Watch Series 4, this year's MacBook Air, Beats headphones and the HomePod smart speaker.

Rhere are also killer deals to be had at Best Buy on Microsoft's new Surface Pro 7 and a heap of other laptops, tablets, TVs and more.

You need to be a member of My Best Buy rewards program, the basic tier of which is free, to take advantage of some of the best sale prices. Discounts are available online and in-store. We'll keep this list up to date with the best deals in real-time, but the current highlights are below.

Best Buy has also revealed its Black Friday ad, offering many specific products it's selling for the real Black Friday timeframe later this month.  Note that most of these sale prices are good through Sunday, November 10, but some will sell out as the sale progresses.

Black Friday deals come early at Best Buy Sarah Tew/CNET

Best Buy has Bose's SoundLink Revolve on sale for £120, which is the lowest price we've seen for it. This model is smaller than the SoundLink Revolve Plus, but it's a very good compact Bluetooth speaker. Read our Bose SoundLink Revolve review.

Black Friday deals come early at Best Buy David Carnoy/CNET

Best Buy has the JLabs JBuds Air on sale for £30 through Sunday, Nov.

    10. They normally retail for £50. JLabs makes a lot of true wireless earphones and this is its most affordable -- and frankly, the only one I'd buy.

It's a decent set of true wireless earbuds that's a relative bargain at £30.

Black Friday deals come early at Best Buy David Carnoy/CNET

We saw this deal last year but it's still a good one: Sony's micro Bluetooth speaker, the SRS-XB01, is on sale for £15 at Best Buy. Read our Sony SRS-XB01 review.

If you're less inclined to buy from Apple, Garmin's rugged fitness watches are great. The Fenix 5X cost £700 when it came out in 2017 -- now, Best Buy has it for £300. I've been using Garmin's lower-end Forerunner 245 and I like it a lot.

The model on sale here includes all of its fitness tracking functions and adds an altimeter and barometer. Plus, you get topographic US maps, routable cycling maps for turn-by-turn navigation and a scratch-resistant sapphire lens. Read our Garmin Fenix 5X preview.

Black Friday deals come early at Best Buy Ariel Nunez/CNET

Walmart has been selling these headphones for about £120 -- a massive £80 discount off the £200 list price. Now, Best Buy takes it a step further by cutting the price to £90. Read our Powerbeats3 review.

Black Friday deals come early at Best Buy Sarah Tew/CNET

We love the UE Boom 2 -- a compact, durable wireless Bluetooth speaker that plays loud and sounds good.

It's stain-resistant, shock-resistant and fully waterproof. Battery life is a strong 15 hours, and it can be paired with a second UE speaker for stereo sound. Read our UE Boom 2 review.

Sure, this entry-level configuration has lower-end components (Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD). But you're still getting the best Windows two-in-one tablet, with the Type Cover thrown in, for £600.

This is a dynamite deal. Read our Surface Pro 7 preview.

More early deals available now through Sunday, Nov.

Overwatch 1 and 2 clients will merge; four new heroes reportedly in the works Sun, 10 Nov 2019 01:30:23 +0000

Overwatch 2 is titled as a sequel but it will function more like an expansion to the hero-based shooter, as more details about the upcoming game were revealed by director Jeff Kaplan. In an interview with Kotaku at BlizzCon 2019, Kaplan told Kotaku that new maps and heroes will arrive to Overwatch 1 and 2 at the same time, and once the sequel arrives, its predecessor will also receive all the graphical upgrades. The plan, according to Kaplan, is to eventually merge the clients of the two games, in order to avoid "fragmenting the player base." The combined clients will also ensure that competition will remain fair, as players will not have an advantage over others just because they are on a newer version of the Overwatch engine.

Kaplan's answer was part of a wider conversation on how the secret development of Overwatch 2 caused stagnation in the original game, which was seen through the repetition of seasonal events. Kaplan thinks that the team was still able to do enough, with the addition of new heroes, the role queue system, and Workshop mode, but he believes that updates will ramp up once again after the sequel is released. Those updates will include at least four heroes, according to a report by Game Informer's Andrew Reiner, who visited the Overwatch development team in early October.

Kaplan showed Reiner a PowerPoint presentation that featured the new content for the sequel, and one of the slides contained four unfamiliar silhouettes, three of whom he believed were female heroes. The first of the two characters that he got a good look at was a male "wizard, warlock, or voodoo priest" with a crooked staff. The second was a short-haired female that wielded "a giant four-sided weapon" similar to the shuriken of Final Fantasy VII's Yuffie, with a "fuzzy little critter" by her side that had an aggressive stance.

Kaplan quickly switched slides so Reiner did not get a good look at the other two silhouettes, and no further information was given about them. It is unclear if the two other heroes are Sojourn and Echo, who were featured in the Overwatch 2 announcement trailer, and if the four heroes will be added upon launch or in staggered releases. Overwatch 2 was announced at BlizzCon 2019 with a cinematic that featured several familiar heroes, including Tracer, Mei, and Genji.

Blizzard has not revealed a release date for the sequel.

    The best luxury SUVs in 2019 Sun, 10 Nov 2019 01:10:00 +0000

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 is just one of our picks for the best luxury SUVs available in 2019.

Picking the right luxury crossover or SUV is getting more difficult with each passing year as automakers scramble to meet growing consumer demand. Luxury crossover and SUVs range from compact and fuel-efficient to large, luxurious eight-passenger houses on wheels and high-performance options, too.

Our editors have compiled a list of the best luxury crossover and SUVs you can buy in 2019.

    2019 Volvo XC90 Excellence

The Volvo XC90 offers an insane amount of luxury, and the Excellence is the upper-crust trim, for just over £100,000. It may look like a regular XC90 on the outside, but the interior of this vehicle is out-of-this-world cool, with two sculpted rear seats with a drink cooler in the console between them.

Just like the seating, the cup holders are both heated and cooled. The Excellence is available with a single powertrain: a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder I4, paired with a battery and electric motor. All in, the plug-in hybrid makes a healthy 400 horsepower with great fuel economy.

    -- Kyle Hyatt

    2019 Lincoln Navigator

Lincoln's new Navigator is just about the best way to spend your money in the luxury full-size SUV space. Its primary competitor, the Escalade, which also has a third-row seat, is nearly equally priced and it feels like it's 10 years old. The choice among large SUVs is obvious.

The Navigator drives like a dream and its interior is some of Lincoln's best work in... maybe forever. The world needs more blue interiors. -- Andrew Krok

    2019 Bentley Bentayga

    Let's see... a 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine producing 600 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque.

Why wouldn't this be my choice among my favorite luxurious SUVs? Sure, it costs over £200,000, but I can't help thinking how fun it would be to slap some aggressive tires on the Bentayga and hit the dunes. In addition to its superluxurious interior, the Bentayga has eight driving modes, including those for snow, sand, grass and trails.

And if the W12 is too much for you, there are also V8 and hybrid models. -- Emme Hall

    2019 Porsche Cayenne

Between a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 making 550 horsepower and 558 pound-feet of torque in the Turbo model and an E-Hybrid coming in the very near future, the Cayenne spans a wide potential performance gamut. It's a big SUV, but it still handles like a proper Porsche.

Plus, the new PCM infotainment, also seen in the Panamera models, is streets ahead of the older system with increased functionality and ease of use. -- Antuan Goodwin

    2019 Mazda CX-9

You might not think of Mazda as a luxury brand, but I promise, in its top trim levels, the 2019 CX-9 is as nice as many of the other SUVs on this list. A 2.5-liter turbocharged engine is mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic.

It's like the proverbial butter behind the wheel. But you don't even have to drive this mid-size SUV to appreciate how well the CX-9 punches above its weight. Just look at it.

It's stunning. -- Manuel Carrillo III

    2019 Audi Q7

The three-row Q7 pretty much rocks at everything. It handles like an Audi car should, it looks great, packs in plenty of passengers, and it has all the latest tech.

The bonus: it starts with a base price at under £50,000. Two engine choices are offered. The spry little 2.0-liter turbo with 252 horsepower is enough to motivate the Q7 around town, or you can go big and get a supercharged V6.

The Q7 has excellent tech, from active safety to the intuitive MMI infotainment system. Virtual Cockpit, which puts navigation and other info front and center, is well worth the extra £2,000. -- Jake Holmes

    2019 Mercedes-AMG G63

Yes, it's a ridiculous anachronism, but nothing drives or feels like a Gelandewagen.

It's singularly lovable and memorable, a true living legend that drips both luxury and off-road ability. The V8-powered G550 offers ample performance, but why not go with the 577-horsepower G63. Sure, it starts at £147,500, but aren't you worth it?

    -- Chris Paukert

    2019 GMC Yukon Denali

GMC's big-boy Yukon Denali comes standard with a 6.2-liter V8 making 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, which is mated to an excellent 10-speed automatic transmission. It offers a really smooth and quiet ride for a such a big, body-on-frame sport utility vehicle. Denali-specific exterior touches add a little more styling and look better than the too-flashy Cadillac Escalade.

The Yukon Denali starts at £66,200. -- Jon Wong

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

The Velar may start at under £50,000, but that doesn't mean it's not chock-a-block with British luxury. This car is loaded with advanced driver aid systems, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist.

You can also get some cool car tech like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, traffic sign recognition and a drowsy driver monitor. The interior is a minimalist's delight, flooded with light from an available panoramic moonroof. Comfortable front seats are heated and cooled and come with massage functionality.

And cargo capacity is impressive. -- Steven Ewing

    2019 Jaguar I-Pace

Luxury is increasingly about reduction of stress, and silently flying down the road in an electric SUV that requires basically zero maintenance and has comprehensive safety features certainly would make it pretty easy to relax. Not that any owner is likely to go there, but the all-wheel drive I-Pace is a legitimately good off-road driving vehicle.

I tackled some impressively steep terrain on some low-profile, road-biased tires, determining that the I-Pace is the best off-road EV on the market rivaling any Tesla model. The I-Pace is legitimately quick, with 394 horsepower and a 0-60 time of just 4.5 seconds. Despite that and all-wheel drive, this car will do 240 miles on a charge.

It starts at just under £70,000. -- Tim Stevens Read more: 2019 Jaguar F-Pace SVR first drive review

Between Sony, Bose and Apple AirPods Pro, there's stiff competition amongst active noise-canceling headphones in the lead up to Black Friday. But now, we're seeing an old favorite from Sennheiser that's currently under £80 at Amazon -- reduced from £200. We reviewed the Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC previously, and it is a formidable competitor to Bose with that £200 price tag.

That model is now £108 on Amazon, but this one -- the HD 4.50 SE -- has the same specs at an even better price, aside from some cosmetic color differences.

The Sennheiser wireless headphones support Bluetooth 4.0 and aptX and has active noise cancellation and an incredibly frequency response of 18Hz to 22,000Hz.

Sennheiser rates the battery life for up to 19 hours with noise cancellation on and up to an impressive 25 hours with it off.

It comes bundled with a cable so you can keep the party going in wired mode (for plugging into in-flight entertainment system, for instance).

Microsoft's Bing still showed child porn, as tech firms struggle with issue Sun, 10 Nov 2019 00:44:56 +0000

    Getty Images

Microsoft's Bing search engine reportedly still served up child porn, nearly a year after the tech giant said it was addressing the issue. The news comes as part of a Saturday report in The New York Times that looks at what the newspaper says is a failure by tech companies to adequately address child pornography on their platforms.

In January, Bing was called out for surfacing child pornography and for suggesting additional search terms related to illegal images. At the time, TechCrunch reported, Microsoft said it was doing the best job it could of screening such material and that it was "committed to getting better all the time."

But a former Microsoft executive told the Times that it now looks as if the company is failing to use its own tools. The Times' Saturday report notes that 10 years ago, Microsoft helped create software called PhotoDNA that "can use computers to recognize photos, even altered ones, and compare them against databases of known illegal images." But, the Times said, Bing and other search engines that use Bing's results are serving up imagery that doesn't pass muster with PhotoDNA. A computer program created by the Times used more than three dozen terms to query search engines and see if the sites returned child sexual abuse material.

Viewing such material is illegal, and the program blocked the resulting imagery, but it noted where on the internet the pictures were coming from. Then those Web addresses were sent to the PhotoDNA service, which matched many of the associated pictures to known illegal imagery. In January, after the earlier report about Bing, Microsoft said it was using "a combination of PhotoDNA and human moderation" to screen content "but that doesn't get us to perfect every time." The Times' Saturday report quotes a Microsoft spokesperson as saying that child porn is "a moving target."

"Since the NYT brought this matter to our attention, we have found and fixed some issues in our algorithms to detect unlawful images," the spokesperson told the Times. Microsoft didn't immediately respond to CNET's request for comment. The Bing news is part of a larger story from the Times about how various tech companies are dealing with child porn on their platforms. "Approaches by tech companies are inconsistent, largely unilateral and pursued in secret, often leaving pedophiles and other criminals who traffic in the material with the upper hand," the Times report said.

Part of the issue is privacy, some companies say. "Tech companies are far more likely to review photos and videos and other files on their platforms for facial recognition, malware detection and copyright enforcement," the Times said. "But some businesses say looking for abuse content is different because it can raise significant privacy concerns."

PlayStation CEO wants PlayStation 4 owners to quickly upgrade to PlayStation 5 Sun, 10 Nov 2019 00:30:28 +0000

PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan wants PlayStation 4 owners to upgrade as soon as possible to the PlayStation 5, which hints at what gamers may expect from the next-generation console. Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 5 will roll out in the holiday season of 2020, so PlayStation 4 owners will have to wait about a year. However, once the console is released, Ryan is hoping that the transition will be seamless.

"As we move towards the next-generation in 2020, one of our tasks -- probably our main task -- is to take that community and transition it from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and at a scale and pace that we've never delivered on before," said Ryan in an interview with Games Industry. There remain many questions surrounding the upcoming console, including whether it is worth it to buy it on the first day. However, it appears that Sony wants as many PlayStation 4 owners as possible to make that decision.

Ryan's comment suggests that Sony is planning a massive launch to achieve that targeted "scale and pace" in getting PlayStation 4 owners to upgrade to the new console. One important factor that will come into play is the price, so Ryan may be hinting that the PlayStation 5 will be more affordable than expected. Another possible driving force for quick upgrades would be an attractive library of games that will be available upon the new console's launch.

This is apparently possible, as Ryan said that developers and publishers are having fun with their spaceship-looking development kits. "One thing that makes me particularly optimistic that what we're hearing from developers and publishers, is the ease in which they are able to get code running on PlayStation 5 is way beyond any experience they've had on any other PlayStation platform." Ryan added that Sony is also planning a global campaign for the PlayStation 5 launch, which should get the console in more hands as soon as it launches.

There are still many unconfirmed details about the PlayStation 5, such as how backward compatibility will work for the new console, and whether the rumors are true that it will be released alongside the PlayStation 5 Pro.

One thing is for sure though, and that is Sony wants PlayStation 4 owners to start saving up for an upgrade.

From Instagram to Angry Birds, here are the top apps of the decade Sun, 10 Nov 2019 00:15:05 +0000

    Angela Lang/CNET

In the last decade, apps (and by association, smartphones) have become an essential part of our lives. Since the iOS App Store and Google Play launched in 2008 with what seemed like mostly novelty titles, they've grown to include millions of apps that help us communicate, meet new people, listen to music and kill pigs with birds. OK, sometimes we still use our phones to make calls, but apps are so popular there are now apps that tell you how much time you spend using apps on your phone.
As part of CNET's Decade in Review here are our picks for the impactful apps of the 2010s.

I crowdsourced this list from every CNET editor and then curated it further from there. The result is the list below in no particular order.
Note that in the case of very similar apps, I combined the most popular ones in that category, instead of having individual entries. And, sure, there are hundreds of impactful and important apps not on this list.

If you feel we didn't include one of your favorite apps, put it in the comments and I'll be sure to chime in as well.

What is it? Instagram allows you to share photos and videos.
Why it's on the list: Instagram has changed the way we think about photos and, for many of us, altered our eating habits (for a time I couldn't start eating my dinner until I captured its image perfectly). It's also become an incredibly effective marketing tool over the years and continues to grow, as it has now reached 1 billion users per month. I think the reason it's still popular is because it continues to evolve in meaningful ways.

Adding things like Stories and Boomerang over the last few years has kept it feeling fresh and adopting these features is a great way to continue to expand its user base. While celebrity influencers continue to make us believe they're actual living impossibly extravagant lives in order to sell us products. and many people still behave completely irresponsibly in order to capture that "perfect pic," Instagram is still one of the most simple and entertaining social platforms out there.

    Getty Images

What is it? A social media platform for posting text, pictures and videos.
Why it's on the list: Thirteen years after its debut, no one would argue that Twitter has completely changed the way the world communicates. From the Arab Spring where protesters used Twitter to not only coordinate, but also voice their message to the world, to world leaders like President Donald Trump, who can now immediately send a message to every connected person on the planet, it's clear that communication will never be the same.

Though Twitter hasn't proven successful at clamping down on hate speech, it's still one of the best and most informative social networks.

What is it? A social media and networking platform
Why it's on the list: Like Twitter, Facebook's debut predated the decade, but it's become the premiere social media platform in the world, with nearly 2.5 billion active users. It let you reconnect with old friends and family members across the world, and you were inundated with memes, cat videos, requests for Farmville and news, both real and not so much. After the short boom of MySpace, Facebook popularized social media with the mainstream.

However, amid its user privacy scandals and influx of fake news, the platform has fallen under harsh scrutiny since the 2016 election.

What are they? Dating apps, popularized by their simple filtering mechanic.
Why they're on the list: Never before has the act of finding someone, no matter your needs and wants, been as easy (in the case of Tinder and Bumble, swipe right on a potential mate's pic if you're interested. If not, swipe left.) People use the apps for everything from quick hookups to casual dating to looking for long-term relationships. Grindr, a dating app geared towards the LGBTQ community, was the first to debut, but Tinder profoundly changed the dating scene.

Suddenly you could filter your choices almost instantly to get exactly what you were looking for. LOL! If only human beings were such simple creatures!

    Google Maps/Apple Maps

What are they? The two most popular map/directions apps in the world.
Why they're on the list: I honestly don't travel without using one of these. I have a horrible sense of direction, I didn't start driving until I was in my 30s, and I still don't know most streets by name. Seriously, I'm terrible and need these.

But I digress. These apps took Mapquest to its logical evolutionary conclusion. Now you can travel anywhere in the world without ever needing to know exactly where a place is.

Just follow the directions like you're playing GTA or something and even see what your destination looks like from the outside. Although I personally prefer Google Maps, Apple Maps has vastly improved since its disastrous launch a few years back.

The latest update to Google Maps brings the number of options for reporting traffic slowdowns to seven.

What is it? A music streaming service
Why it's on the list: I remember when Spotify debuted in 2011. It seemed to come out of nowhere and further changed (you'll see this word a lot on this list if you haven't already) the ever-evolving music industry.

It felt a lot like the original version of Napster, only legal, but still free. Too free for some, as some artists like Taylor Swift have in the past pulled all of their music from the service. Swift eventually returned to the streaming giant.
At its launch, Spotify enjoyed a huge 50 million-song library that dwarfed those of its competitors at the time. Spotify eventually led Apple to create its own music service called Apple Music in 2015, which now also has access to over 50 million songs.

What is it? An instant messaging platform
Why it's on the list: What makes Slack any different from a billion other IM clients in the last 25 years?

It's mostly its integration with other apps and the way it can start to feel like the nucleus for everything happening at your work. These days it's a toss-up over which I open first in the morning: Slack or email. Slack is like email, part 2.

But, it's not just useful for work. As family life gets busier, families are using Slack to communicate, which is weird but also weirdly appealing as my own family starts to grow. But like every tool, it comes down to how you use it -- the debate over whether Slack improves or impairs productivity continues.

    Could Uber reach super-app status?

    Denis Charlet/AFP via Getty Images

What are they? Order a rideshare on your phone to your exact location and pay automatically through your credit card.
Why they're on the list: I remember four years ago when my 16-year old nice visited me in San Francisco from Minneapolis.

She'd never heard of Uber, and the whole thing kind of creeped her out. Now, I don't think she can imagine traveling any other way. Of course, the convenience has not come without cost.

Both Uber and Lyft great have faced lawsuits over alleged sexual assaults by drivers, cities around the world have attempted to regulate them, and drivers have battled for better pay. And while all those additional cars on the street can choke traffic in cities, there's no denying the effect these apps have had on the way we travel.

What is it? Allows you to make digital payments to other individuals.
Why it's on the list: As a person that rarely carries cash, I could never easily pay my share when out to dinner with a group of friends. That why Venmo and other apps like it have been a godsend -- with them I don't constantly feel like a deadbeat.

You can pay for stuff for friends like movie tickets, and now they have zero excuse not to pay you right back, even before the movie starts! We're deadbeats no more!

Angry Birds in AR -- it's coming to iOS.

    Sarah Tew/CNET

    Angry Birds

What is it? A game where you launch birds at structures in an attempt to kill pigs
Why it's on the list: In its early days, Angry Birds was so popular, I convinced myself I had to like it. Ultimately, when I played it I didn't, but its impact on the expectations of how popular mobile game could be is unprecedented. Two movies and plenty of versions of the game later, Angry Birds is still a very popular franchise and has continued to evolve with the times, most recently with Angry Birds AR.

Again, not my cup of tea, but many still enjoy taking a sip.

    Candy Crush Saga

What is it? A match-three puzzle game.
Why it's on the list: I knew this was something special when my wife, who isn't a gamer, not only couldn't put it down, but also spent money playing it. It took her six years to finally move on to Two Dots. I've never played Candy Crush Saga and probably won't -- the visuals are just a bit too saccharine for me -- but it's one of the most popular tile-matching games of all time.

You can pick it up quickly, it has a satisfying gameplay mechanic, and it's something you could do while listening to books (to paraphrase my wife). Despite her falling off, the game's overall popularity has shown no signs of waning.

    Pokemon Go

What is it? The first big AR game based in the Pokemon universe
Why it's on the list: It was a phenom when it was released in 2016. I tried playing from my house, but there was nothing to find in my little suburban neighborhood, so I quickly gave up as I was too self-conscious to play in the city.

The game eventually lost most of its player base, but is still incredibly popular, having crossed 1 billion downloads earlier this year. Its formula for success was simple: Combine an already successful franchise with a new technology with heavy social ties. It's worked quite well.

What is it? Video platform that let you make videos up to six seconds long and share them.
Why it's on the list: After an exciting start in 2012, Vine was discontinued by its owner, Twitter, in 2016 amid growing competition, especially from Instagram.

But during its life, Vine quickly popularized the short-form video app. It gave you the ability to make six-second videos and immediately post them, which (at the time) was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen in an app. I dove right in, experimenting with some weird techniques, picking up others and attempting to develop storytelling skills.

Like with most things, I was done and ready to move on after a couple of months, but Vine continued to be a hit, leading to the birth of its evolutionary cousin, TikTok.

    Flappy Bird

What is it? A super-difficult mobile game that no longer exists in its original form.
Why it's on the list: Remember when this game was the most-downloaded app on the app store? It held that place for about a month in 2014 before its developer suddenly took it down. He said it was so addictive that he was losing sleep over getting so many people hooked.

It was crazy-hard and something I could stomach for no more than a couple minutes. And its notoriety continued, even after its removal -- people were attempting (unsuccessfully) to sell phones that still had the game on Ebay for up to £100,000.

What are they? Two hugely popular chat platforms
Why they're on the list: They're both Facebook products and essentially do the same thing, however differently. Facebook stripped Messenger from the Facebook app in 2011 and made it its own thing.

It's incredibly popular and the preferred way to communicate for a lot of people, especially if you're on Facebook but don't have someone's number or you want to forgo texting. WhatsApp is the lighter version that uses less data and encrypts its messages end-to-end (user to user), which is more secure than Messenger's solution of sending messages to a server before it gets sent to the recipient. It's also incredibly popular, especially in Asian countries.

What is it: A video-streaming app, focused on original content.
Why it's on the list: Netflix is the premier video-streaming app.

With it, you get access to Netflix's ever-growing number of original movies and series, like Stranger Things and Narcos. The iOS and Android apps allow you to download most shows or movies to your phone. Despite heavy and growing competition, Netflix is still the streaming app every other one is measured by. At least for now.

What is it? A social media and messaging app where videos and messages disappear after a time.
Why it's on this list:  Snapchat launched in 2011, but its popularity hit the stratosphere between 2013 and 2015, after adding video sharing, Snapchat Stories, ephemeral text messaging and (most importantly) the rainbow vomit feature.

It allowed people to post short videos that would expire and be "gone forever" after a set time. I have to admit, as a chronically old fuddy-duddy I never saw the appeal of making videos or writing texts that disappear after awhile, but that's just me. I guess I'm a hoarder at heart and I want everything I make to be available for access forever.

What is it? A video app that allows anyone to post videos and watch them.
Why it's on this list:  YouTube has changed the way we consume media, from posting viral videos to slickly produced original clips by 'YouTubers." There's no longer an excuse to not be a filmmaker if you've ever dreamed of being one (talking to you, self!).
I use it all the time, and with YouTube's monthly subscription service that removes ads and allows me to play videos in the background, I can listen to YouTube audio in the background.

For that reason alone it deserves to be included here, and I'm surprised more video apps have not added this feature. In the last few years, however, as the number of videos with disinformation and racism have increased, the platform has come under criticism. Still, the number of its users has grown to well over 1 billion and is showing no signs of slowing down.

    Google Pay/Apple Pay

What are they? Mobile payment apps that let you pay at retail or online using only your phone, tablet or smartwatch.
Why they're on this list: Being able to pay for things with your phone seemed like such a novel concept a few years back, but now it's my preferred way to pay and usually works seamlessly.

It seems like such a small thing, but I'm always looking for that Apple Pay logo. It's just an extra level of convenience that I really appreciate.

    Angela Lang/CNET

    Google Assistant/Siri/Alexa

What are they? The top voice assistants on the market.
Why they're on this list: Siri was the first big voice assistant when it debuted in 2011, but other options that followed have outpaced it. (Google Assistant, in particular, is smarter and more intuitive.) I use an Apple HomePod with Siri and am constantly disappointed by the fact that Siri isn't smarter. I'm hoping that changes soon.

Having to say "Hey, Siri" for every command just gets old fast.
It's important to remember that, as exciting as this technology continues to be, the simple fact is that your voice assistants are recording you and as a result, Google, Apple and Amazon (with Alexa) have now either put a halt to having humans listen to you in the "privacy" of your own home or allow you to opt out of this recording. It's still disconcerting though.

What is it? The app for the world's largest online retailer.
Why it's on this list: If you raised a young child without the help of the Amazon app, you're a god in my book. I've used Amazon since I bought my first DVD some time in 2000. The Matrix or maybe X-Men?

Possibly Ninja Scroll? I'm not sure, but I've not stopped shopping since, and I likely won't anytime soon. Now, with an app it's even easier and faster -- so fast that I don't even need to add a task to my to-do list.

When I'm juggling an uncooperative toddler with a 1-year old who's doing his best to jump head-first off a couch, the ability to take 15 seconds from catching diving kids to order them new vitamins is huge -- it makes my life that much easier.

What are they? Real-time video-based phones calls
Why they're on this list: This is that sci-fi video-phone future that's even better than what any sci-fi film could have predicted, obviously because none of them predicted the rise of the smartphone. I don't use it a lot, but the times when I do are special, like if I'm away from my kids and want to see their faces. It's not like you see on The Jetsons, but the fact that I can see my sons when I'm away on business, or even a co-worker a thousand miles away, is amazing.

FaceTime's new trick makes it look like you're staring into the camera.

    Jason Cipriani/CNET

What is it? The game that took over your kid's/nephew's/cousin's life
Why it's on this list: Fortnite has had the type of cultural impact few games, if any, ever achieve.

From the whole Fortnite dance debacle to the fact that the winner of the 2019 Fortnite World Cup was awarded £3 million, Fortnite is a huge, unstoppable pop culture juggernaut that shows no sign of slowing down.  As long as the developers keep the game fresh by doing things like ending it, its popularity should continue for some time.

    Uber Eats/Postmates/Grubhub/DoorDash

What are they? Order food for delivery, even if the restaurant in question does not itself deliver.
Why they're on the list: I remember the frustration of wanting food from one of my favorite restaurants and seeing its "No deliveries" sign. That now feels like a thing of the distant past.

Sure, eating out all the time isn't cheap or always healthy, but I like to have the option. If I want a barbecue lunch, but I don't have 20 minutes to go get it, it's comforting to know there are people out there who don't mind doing it for me... for a price.

    Sarah Tew/CNET

    Google Photos

What is it? A photo storage app for both Android and iOS.
Why it's on the list: I imagine your big question is, why did Google Photos make the list and not the Photos app and iCloud on iOS? Well, as good as the Photos app is on iOS -- and it has definitely improved lately -- the app isn't compatible with Android.

Google Photos, though, works on Android and iOS.

It also has more cloud storage than iCloud, and its search feature is more robust and useful.

You can search for a word that appears in a picture or even by pronouns -- just in case you want to find your friend's baby's pictures, but can't remember when you took them.

Apple Mail on MacOS flaw leaves supposedly encrypted messages unprotected Sat, 09 Nov 2019 23:51:24 +0000

A vulnerability that was discovered on the macOS version of Apple Mail is compromising the security of supposedly encrypted messages, but Apple said a fix is on the way. The flaw, which was shared by Apple-focused IT specialist Bob Gendler, was found on the four most recent MacOS releases, namely Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. He found macOS database files that include information from Apple Mail, which is then utilized by digital assistant Siri to make suggestions.

Unfortunately, one of the files, named snippets.db, is storing the unencrypted text of the emails. Only a small number of people are affected by the issue. The user needs to be sending encrypted emails from Apple Mail on macOS Sierra to macOS Catalina, with FileVault not activated to encrypt the entire system.

The person who wants to read the unencrypted emails will also need to know exactly where the information is stored in the computer's system files and will need to have access to it. However, for the affected users, the risk is massive. Encrypted emails are protected for a reason, such as to keep confidential information safe, so any chance that they may be compromised is a big deal.

"It brings up the question of what else is tracked and potentially improperly stored without you realizing it," Gendler said. Apple is aware of the issue and said that a fix is on the way through a future software update. Gendler, however, noted that he reported the issue on July 29, but Apple did not respond until November 5.

While waiting for the flaw to be patched, a suggested workaround is to disable the Learn from this App option under the Mail option of the Siri Suggestions & Privacy menu, which is found in Siri's section in System Preferences. This is just a temporary solution though, as it only stops new emails from being included in the compromised snippets.db file.

The encryption vulnerability follows another issue with macOS Catalina's Apple Mail app, specifically missing or incomplete messages after upgrading to the latest macOS release, as well as messages going blank after moving them between mailboxes. Similar problems also appeared after upgrading iPhones to iOS 13.

The best coffee makers for 2019: Bonavita, Ninja, Oxo, Moccamaster and more Sat, 09 Nov 2019 23:42:00 +0000

In theory, drip coffee makers are dead simple machines. You give them grounds, hit them with hot water, and then let gravity and time do the rest. It sounds easy, but it's not.

Most drip coffee makers fail miserably at this basic task -- some because they don't get water hot enough or brew too slowly. Others overcompensate, and end up scalding their grounds completely. Few drip coffee makers have what it takes to deliver drip coffee at its best.

There are noteworthy exceptions, and whether you prefer to brew iced coffee, perfect lattes or freshly ground coffee, you don't need to spend a mint to get the best coffee maker.

You can drop over £600 on a tricked-out Ratio Eight that's as beautiful as it is capable. But all it takes is £15 to get Oxo's superb Single Serve Pour Over funnel. Read: 8 gifts for coffee lovers | Coffee products you never knew you needed | The best coffee grinder you can buy right now | The best espresso machines for 2019

And there are plenty of compelling choices in-between. One is our Editor's Choice winner, the Bonavita Connoisseur, our pick for best all-around automatic brewer. Another is the KitchenAid Siphon Brewer, which uses an ancient technique to achieve outstanding and dramatic results.

No matter your budget, there's something on this list that'll fit your drip needs perfectly and be the best coffee maker for you.

    Chris Monroe/CNET

Despite its snobby name, the Connoisseur from Bonavita is the best automatic drip coffee maker you can buy for the least amount of cash. It reliably brews full pots of great coffee that rival what you would get from your favorite coffee shop or barista, and it's a cinch to use. This perfect coffee maker also works fast, has all the bells and whistles including a stainless steel lined thermal carafe, and it's a snap to keep clean with a removable, dishwasher safe filter basket and carafe lid.

It's hard to beat the KitchenAid Siphon Brewer's unique combination of spectacle and quality. The coffee it makes is distinctly rich, deep and seductively flavorful. Its vintage brewing method, based on vapor pressure and vacuum suction (no paper filters needed here), is also mesmerizing to watch. Read our Kitchenaid Siphon Coffee Brewer review.

Think of this kitchen appliance as the Swiss army knife of the drip coffee maker world.

The Ninja brewer (with frother, thermal carafe and reusable filter) offers an uncanny degree of flexibility. It can create everything from solid drip, to perfect cold brew, to iced coffee, to latte-style drinks with its milk frother, and it will adjust the temperature according to your choice. Its thermal carafe will keep tea or coffee hot up to two hours.

It even lets you brew in multiple sizes, from small cups, mugs, travel mugs, all the way up to half and full carafes.   Read our Ninja Hot and Cold Brewed System review.

Cold brew coffee is delicious, but it can be a pain to make. Oxo's cold brew contraption takes much of the headache out of the process. It saturates grounds evenly, and lets you drain cold brewed coffee from them with relative ease.   Read our Oxo Cold Brew Coffee Maker review.

Great tasting drip from a product that costs just £15?

It sounds unlikely but that's just what the affordable Oxo Good Grips Pour-Over offers. It only makes coffee one drink at a time, and requires you to provide the hot water. That said, the simple brewer transforms the otherwise complex task of pour-over into one that's easy, clean and almost foolproof.    Read our Oxo Good Grips Pour-Over Coffee Maker review.

Judging by their Ratio Eight appliance, the people at Ratio believe coffee makers should be beautiful as well as functional.

Starting at £495, each brewer is crafted from a selection of premium materials like walnut, mahogany and glass. (Both the water reservoir and carafe are made from hand-blown glass.) Their sturdy aluminum bases are available in numerous finishes as well. And yes, the Ratio Eight also makes excellent drip.   Read our Ratio Eight review.

Dutch company Technivorm has sold exceptionally good drip coffee makers for decades. Its Moccamaster KBT 741 sports a design that harkens back to 1968, the year the first Moccamaster hit stores.

Retro design aside, the Moccamaster KBT 741 consistently puts out perfect freshly brewed coffee that will satisfy coffee connoisseurs. It's stainless steel thermal carafe also keeps its contents hot a full 6 hours.  Read our Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 review.

A note on testing coffee makers

Evaluating the performance of a coffee maker is trickier than it might sound. The first step is to know what good drip coffee actually is.

According to the Specialty Coffee Association, there are criteria critical to brewing quality java. Mainly these are brewing time and water temperature. Hot water should come into contact with grounds for no less than 4 minutes, and no longer than 8 minutes.

Additionally, the ideal water temperature range is between 197 degrees Fahrenheit (92C) and 205 degrees Fahrenheit (96C). To confirm how each coffee maker meets that challenge, we log the length of their brew cycles. We also employ thermocouple heat sensors connected to industrial-grade data loggers.

That enables us to record the temperature within the coffee grounds while brewing is underway.

We measure the temperature inside the brewing chamber of every coffee maker we test.

    Brian Bennett/CNET

After brewing coffee, we take sample readings of the produced coffee liquid with an optical refractometer. Given we factor in the amount of water and freshly ground coffee used, that data lets us calculate the Total Dissolved Solids percentage of each brew. From there we arrive at the extraction percentage.

The ideal range is commonly thought to be between 18 and 20%. We also back up measured data with a good, old fashioned taste test. If the taste of the coffee is bitter, there's a good chance it was over extracted.

On the opposite end, under extracted coffee will typically taste weak -- it can even taste sour or have the flavour of soggy peanuts.

And to be certain, we brew identical test runs a minimum of three times to achieve average results.

Fortnite Chapter 2 season 1 challenges and where to find hidden 'N,' EGO outposts Sat, 09 Nov 2019 23:20:00 +0000

    Time for the Lowdown.

    Epic Games

Fortnite Chapter 2 may be a refresh of the game, but the challenges are the same as last season. A set of tasks is available to players each week, giving them experience points when completed. Points acquired increase a player's tier level, which unlocks more content, especially if they have a season Battle Pass.

Challenges are added every Thursday during the season.

This week's tasks focus on the newly added EGO outposts.

    Lowdown challenges

The Lowdown challenges for Fortnite Chapter 2 season 1.

    Epic Games

Search 7 chests at EGO outposts / Visit 5 different EGO outposts

EGO outposts are small military compounds found across the island in Fortnite Chapter 2. There are two challenges this week requiring players to open chests and visit the outposts. To help yourself complete these tasks, check the map below for the outpost locations.

Deal 500 damage to opponents while riding in a motorboat

Motorboats were another new addition in Fortnite Chapter 2.

The boats let players speed up and down the waterways, and they're decked out with rockets. Keep in mind that for this challenge, motorboats can be taken onto the shore if you need to chase someone down.

Heal teammates for 200 health with a Bandage Bazooka

The Bandage Bazooka is a new healing item. It lets players heal teammates from a distance, but these bazookas aren't easy to find.

For this challenge, get into a squad match, and hopefully a Bandage Bazooka will drop. Then you can go off on healing your teammates.  On Saturday, Epic removed the Bandage Bazooka from the game.

According for the Fortnite Status Twitter account, the item was removed due to syncing issues. There was no suggestion on when it will return.

We're aware of reports of the Bandage Bazooka causing syncing issues. As we address this, the Bandage Bazooka has been temporarily disabled from the core, competitive, and Playground playlists.

We'll provide an update when this is resolved.

    -- Fortnite Status (@FortniteStatus) November 9, 2019

Here are the rest of the week's challenges:

    • Three assault rifle eliminations.
    • Revive a teammate in three different matches.
    • Search ammo boxes in seven different named locations.
    • Three eliminations at Craggy Cliffs or Salty Springs.
    • Reboot a teammate.
    • Assist teammates with seven eliminations.

Can you spot the "N" in the back?

Search the hidden 'N' found in the Lowdown loading screen

The Lowdown loading screen unlocks after you've completed all the weeks' challenges. In the background of the loading screen image is the "N" on the second floor. The building, luckily enough, is the EGO Hangar outpost located southwest of Holly Hedges.

Best TV gifts for the holidays Sat, 09 Nov 2019 22:27:00 +0000

A big TV might not fit under the tree, but it's still one helluva gift.

A new TV fits into that special category of gifts that's certain to blow the recipient's stockings off. It's doesn't have to be a huge, expensive TV -- although that helps with the stocking-blowing part -- just something that can replace that aging screen and make the viewer feel a warm fuzzy of gratitude every time they settle in to watch their favorite show or movie. At CNET, we focus our TV reviews on sets that deliver the best value for your money.

As the gift-giver, you're already super-generous for even considering a TV, so why waste money on frivolities? Here's a few of our favorite gift-ready televisions -- all of which have been fully tested and reviewed -- sorted by price. Note that CNET may get a share of the revenue if you buy anything featured on our site.

    Sarah Tew/CNET

It won't fit in among the stocking stuffers, but if you're looking to buy a TV smaller than 55 inches that handles all the streaming apps well, from YouTube to Netflix to Apple's iTunes, this is our top choice. The picture is "good enough" and the built-in Roku system is superb (and really, streaming capability is one of the most important factors these days).

And the price is perfect for a kids' room or secondary room where you don't need a massive screen. Sizes: 28-, 32-, 40-, 43-, 49-inch. (The price shown below is for the 32-inch size.) Read our TCL S325 series (Roku TV) review.

Best TV gifts for the holidays Sarah Tew/CNET

Take everything we said about the 3-Series, add 4K resolution and a larger selection of screen sizes (up to 75 inches), and that's the 4-Series. A cool device at super-affordable price with a superb Roku streaming system makes this the TCL 4-Series a solid buy.

TCL 4-Series can't beat any of the models below on image quality -- its 4K resolution and HDR compatibility don't do anything to help the picture -- but it's perfect for most viewers, especially at this price. Sizes: 43-, 50-, 55-, 65-, 75-inch. (The price shown below is for the 43-inch size.) Read our TCL S425 series (Roku TV) review.

Best TV gifts for the holidays Sarah Tew/CNET

Aside from the TCL 6-Series below, no TV offers this much picture for this little cash. The image quality on this Vizio M8 runs circles around the two TCL sets above, thanks to its full-array local dimming, which leads to truly impressive 4K HDR .

Translation: Great gift. Meanwhile it costs a lot less than many TVs that don't perform as well. Its only real weakness is poor built-in streaming, but you can always attach a dedicated streaming device.

    Sizes: 55-, 65-inch. Read our Vizio M-Series Quantum M8 series (2019) review.

Best TV gifts for the holidays Sarah Tew/CNET

Yep, it's another TCL Roku TV. This one costs a bit more than the Vizio above (or maybe not by the time you read this -- their pricing fluctuates a lot) but its picture quality is a bit better and its Roku smart TV system is ... well, you know about that already. If you take everything into account, this is simply the best TV for the money we've reviewed in 2019, making it a perfect gift.

Sizes: 55-, 65-inch. Read our TCL 6-Series (2019 Roku TV) review.

Samsung's QLED TVs are basically fancy LCDs -- don't confuse them with OLEDs. The Q70R has an excellent picture and plenty of Samsung design and features goodies for a price that's relatively affordable, albeit not exactly "budget." If you're not interested in giving someone a TCL or Vizio and don't want to splurge for an OLED, the Q70 is an excellent choice. And it comes in a wide range of sizes for your giftee's movie watching pleasure.

    Sizes: 49-, 55-, 65-, 75-, 82-inch. Read our Samsung Q70 series (2019) review.

Giving this TV pretty much guarantees you'll make the recipient's year. Organic light-emitting diode technology isn't just super cool, it delivers a contrast and viewing angles that no LCD TV (or QLED) above can touch. The B9 improves on the B8 from 2018 with more extras including HDMI 2.1 features and support for Amazon Alexa and Apple AirPlay 2.

It fell just a bit short of the C9 in image quality (below) in our tests, but the differences are minuscule -- and since it's a couple hundred dollars less expensive than the C9, it's a better value. Sizes: 55-, 65-inch. Read LG OLEDB9P series review.

Best TV gifts for the holidays Sarah Tew/CNET

What's that you say? You just want to give somebody the best TV, money no object?

Here you go. In my side-by-side tests the C9 is the best TV I've ever reviewed, barely beating the B9 (above), but the B9 is a superior value -- almost as good and less expensive. The C9 is the king of 2019 TVs, however, especially in the 77-inch size.

And you can afford it, right?

Sizes: 55-, 65-, 77-inch. Read our LG OLEDC9P series review.

Arcade1Up's Centipede Arcade Machine is a four-foot-high cabinet that plays four classic games.

It's hard to write about Arcade1Up's line of three-quarter-scale arcade cabinets without making some nostalgic reference to childhood. Because these are the games we dumped countless quarters in throughout our youth; Pac-Man and Dig-Dug are as indelibly inscribed in my memory as the first song I truly loved (Olivia Newton John's "I Honestly Love You") and my first kiss (Daria).

No matter which particular arcade games occupy a special place in your memory, Walmart has your back. Right now, the retailer is offering a half-dozen of Arcade1Up's cabinets on sale, letting you save anywhere from 15% to 40%, depending on the model.

Remember, though: These prices are only for the game cabinet, and don't include the £45 riser (which raises it to adult height), which is sold separately. These units all ship in Ikea-style flatpack boxes, and some assembly is required. But we've done it ourselves, and it's not too tough.

MacBook Air vs. iPad Pro Sat, 09 Nov 2019 22:00:44 +0000

    Riley Young/Digital Trends

Want a portable Apple device that packs a punch but doesn't knock out your wallet? Two great contenders enter the ring in a battle for your hard-earned bucks: Apple's MacBook Air and iPad Pro. This brawl may seem like an odd comparison, sure.

At first glance, one is a laptop while the other is a tablet. But those lines are blurring more and more with every passing day. Let's see which one comes out as the heavyweight champion.

Let's start with the MacBook Air.

Previously, Apple used its "Air" label to denote its thinnest, lightest products. But the company completely revamped the MacBook Air in 2018, creating a new slot in Apple's mid-range lineup. The latest MacBook Air features a 13.3-inch screen complemented by silver, space gray, and gold finishes.

Its all-metal chassis retains the classic Air wedge shape.

    MacBook Air vs. iPad Pro

You can equip the MacBook Air with an 8th-gen Intel Core i5 processor, up to 1.5 TB of storage, and 16GB of memory. It also includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports (via USB-C) supporting transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps. On the portability front, it weighs 2.75 pounds.

That's more than the 12-inch MacBook at 2.03 pounds but less than the 13-inch MacBook Pro at 3.02 pounds. It's still more than portable enough to take with you on the go, but it's no longer the slimmest laptop on offer from Apple.

The iPad Pro also underwent a wide-ranging redesign in 2018. It now comes with a flat-edged chassis in 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes complemented by a silver or space gray finish.

    MacBook Air vs. iPad Pro

Customization options on the iPad Pro are a little more limited than those on the MacBook Air.

Four storage options range from 64GB to 1TB. You can choose to add cellular functionality too in addition to the iPad Pro's Wi-Fi connectivity. The iPad Pro's baked-in ingredients include a USB-C port for charging and data transfer, four microphones, two speakers packing impressive sound, a 12-megapixel camera on the back, and a Smart Connector supporting external accessories, like a keyboard.

Ultimately, both devices are beautifully designed, but there's no question which is more modern. The iPad Pro is more portable and sports thin, tiny bezels. The MacBook Air, however, isn't quite as portable and doesn't feature the same thin-bezel design.

The MacBook Air might not be as revolutionary as it once was, but it earns its pedigree in other ways.

One such upgrade over its old design is the introduction of a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution Retina display with slim bezels. Before 2018, the MacBook Air was the last Apple laptop without a Retina screen, and it really showed, making it a poor purchase choice. While we noted its IPS display's color accuracy was excellent in our review, its brightness was a tad disappointing.

It also lacks Apple's excellent True Tone tech to match white balance to the ambient light of your surroundings.

MacBook Air vs. iPad ProRiley Young/Digital Trends

Aside from the Retina display, the MacBook Air's redesign introduced a host of new features, such as the butterfly switch keyboard, a larger trackpad, and Touch ID. These are all features that debuted on the MacBook Pro first, but now, the Air feels like a more modern MacBook. Compared to the hybrid system the iPad Pro has become, however, the MacBook Air feels far more conventional.

It's a clamshell laptop, just like every other one you've ever used.

The iPad Pro is a tablet-first device, especially since the Smart Keyboard isn't sold with the iPad Pro. The attachment doesn't include a trackpad and it's keyboard doesn't compare well to the MacBook Air. If typing is primarily what need a device is for, the MacBook Air is probably the way to go.

Where the iPad Pro leaps ahead is its display. As stated in our review, it's "fantastic for consuming and creating content." It uses the same Liquid Retina tech used in Apple's iPhone XR and the 11-inch model ships with a 2,388 x 1,668 resolution. It even has the same True Tone technology as the MacBook Air, making it easy on your eyes in any situation.

Meanwhile, the larger 12.9-inch option comes with a higher-resolution 2,732 x 2,048 screen. We also love the iPad Pro display's ProMotion feature. This dynamically changes the refresh rate up to a maximum of 120Hz, meaning you always get a smooth experience, whether you're scrolling through a document or drawing with the Apple Pencil.

While the MacBook Air does include Touch ID for password-less login, the iPad Pro takes it a step further with Face ID facial recognition.

MacBook Air vs. iPad ProJulian Chokkattu/Digital Trends

Pitting the MacBook Air against the iPad Pro makes for some interesting performance comparisons. While the MacBook Air uses Intel's Core i5 processor, the iPad Pro packs Apple's own A12X Bionic chip. That in-house chip decision has paid dividends because the iPad Air's performance is hugely impressive.

When we reviewed the iPad Pro and tested its processor's capabilities in Geekbench 4, it scored 5,029 for single-core and 18,042 for multi-core performance. In comparison, the MacBook Air's single-core and multi-core scores were 4,233 and 7,773 respectively. That the iPad Pro easily beats one of Apple's newest MacBooks -- especially in terms of multi-core performance -- is quite incredible.

Even if measuring Geekbench across different platforms isn't quite akin to comparing apples-to-apples, the comparison feels true just when using the two devices anecdotally. Still, it's not an open-and-shut case. The MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt 3 ports mean you can hook up an external graphics card, which will drastically improve its graphics performance.

The MacBook Air's keyboard and trackpad also make it far easier to control in more in-depth applications. Lastly, there's also the operating system to consider. The MacBook Air runs on MacOS, which is an established system with plenty of powerful desktop programs like Adobe Premiere.

Multitasking is a breeze, whether it's multiple applications side by side or dozens of tabs in a web browser. By contrast, the iPad Pro's iPadOS has only recently been spun out from iOS. While it has a bevy of powerful mobile apps and new gesture support at its disposal, the power and organization of MacOS makes it more suited to heavy-duty tasks.

We also need to note MacOS Catalina. Apple's latest operating system for Macs now provides better support for developers to bring their iPad apps over to MacOS. That initiative now sees Twitter's return to the Mac App Store along with new apps from Carrot Weather, GoodNotes, Rosetta Stone, PDF Viewer, Post-It, and many more.

These apps will still likely function better on the iPad, but it does lessen the gap between the two systems.

    What's your use case?

MacBook Air vs. iPad ProRiley Young/Digital Trends

Given their similar price points and different form factors, picking a winner between the MacBook Air and iPad Pro seems rather tricky. In this case, however, we feel the MacBook Air just edges it from a practical standpoint. The iPad Pro is incredibly powerful, though.

It's perfect if you want a superb tablet for drawing, working, and playing on the go. Its new multitasking features make it possible to work on too, but replacing a traditional laptop isn't easy. For most people, working completely without a laptop will feel a bit foreign, especially when it comes to operating within a business that includes coworkers.

Its lack of flexibility can also hold it back. Internally, you can only really customize its storage. The MacBook Air, on the other hand, gives you choices over storage, memory, and processor speed.

Its Thunderbolt 3 ports also mean you can greatly expand its capabilities if needed. The MacBook Air's more powerful operating system and compatibility with some of the world's top pro apps is also a strong selling point, as is its superb trackpad. Those tools make it well-suited to detailed work such as video editing, which is easier to do than on a touch screen like that of the iPad Pro.

So, while we love the iPad Pro -- it's the best tablet money can buy -- the MacBook Air is the device most people should buy if they're looking for an Apple product at this price.

Amazon Cyber Monday deals 2019: Everything you need to know Sat, 09 Nov 2019 21:31:34 +0000

Plan to reserve funds for Cyber Monday and do your best to conserve that moeny during Black Friday's collective retail euphoria. Experienced shoppers know that Amazon doesn't drop all of its best deals on Black Friday. The online mega-merchant reserves a significant share of excellent bargains for Cyber Monday.

So, on December 2 when Cyber Monday 2019 occurs, you can expect another massive round of offerings. The best strategy for Cyber Monday is to plan ahead. That way you'll have the best odds of finding and having money remaining to buy what you want at the very best discounts.

If you start with a list of products you most want, down to model numbers and backup options, you'll be less likely to blow your budget on the first good deal catches your eye. You want to avoid getting caught up the urgency-based sales frenzy on Black Friday. Limited time and limited quantity deals can be tempting but don't jump too soon.

Unless an item is on your "must have" list, hold off during the beginning of any sales event. Don't exhaust your budget too early and miss out on a must-have item later on. Closeout deals at the end of the sale events can be especially sweet when you have discretionary funds to spend on them.

What to expect from Amazon on Cyber Monday

    Pace yourself.

Like other merchants, Amazon doesn't introduce all of its best deals at the beginning of the Cyber Monday. You won't see everything that will be on sale in your target categories with just one early-morning visit. Amazon will feature various types of deals during the day, including lightning deals, short-term, limited-quantity sales, and exclusive bundles.

You might be tempted to lean on your refresh button all day, but let us do that -- because we will. We'll update this page all day with the very best deals in the categories we monitor. Amazon will offer hefty discounts on its own brand products and brands.

Expect the excellent deals on most if not the full lineup of Amazon Echo smart home devices such as the Echo and Echo Dot, Echo Shows, Fire TVs, Fire Tablets, and their Kindle e-readers. You can count on seeing tons of deals on third-party Alexa-compatible devices, including video doorbells, smart security cameras, speakers, lights, robot vacuums, and other appliances.

Because Amazon organizes deals by categories, you should find it very easy to shop for deals on computers and accessories, home, electronics, kitchen, cell phones and accessories, video games, cameras and photography, office products and supplies, and major appliances.

What Amazon did last during Cyber Monday 2018 and Prime Day 2019

By Cyber Monday 2018, Amazon had already sold out on some smart speakers and Echo smart displays, but there were plenty of excellent deals left. One exciting pattern we observed last Cyber Monday and during this year's Prime Day was that Amazon offered attractive discounts on some of its most recently announced products.

For example, during Prime Day 2019, Amazon reduced the price of the then-new Echo Show 5 from its £90 list price to just £60. You can also expect Amazon to offer significant savings on services like Audible audiobooks and possibly discounts on Amazon Prime for new members, too.

    Amazon deals going on now

As we said earlier about Black Friday, you don't have to wait for Cyber Monday to find head-shaking deals on Amazon. We've already noted and posted heavily discounted Amazon deals for smart home devices, vacuums, and small appliances.

Amazon hopes you spend money now and on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so the company will continue to add tempting new deals to the site during the lead up to the post-Thanksgiving sales events. Here are some of the best deals on Amazon now:

We strive to help our readers find the best deals on quality products and services, and we choose what we cover carefully and independently. The prices, details, and availability of the products and deals in this post may be subject to change at anytime.

Be sure to check that they are still in effect before making a purchase.

We interrupt Black Friday for the best Singles Day 2019 deals available now Sat, 09 Nov 2019 21:00:00 +0000

The 11/11 Global Shopping Festival, or Singles Day for short, generates more online sales than Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Prime Day put together.

    James Martin/CNET

With almost £31 billion in retail sales last year alone, China's yearly 24-hour 11/11 Global Shopping Festival is now bigger than Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the weekend in between combined. Adobe Analytics predicts this year's five-day Thanksgiving weekend will drive about £29 billion in retail sales, both online and in-store. So, why have so few Americans even heard of Singles Day?

The history of the world's biggest shopping day of the year begins with a much smaller, lonelier numeral -- the number 1. The unofficial Chinese holiday celebrated every Nov.

11 started out as Singles Day in 1993, when students at Nanjing University in China's Jiangsu province began hosting singles parties meant to counter the negative social stigma associated with singlehood. Since this was a holiday designed to bring singles together, they chose the date with the most 1s -- 11/11 -- to celebrate. And it only grew from there, especially after being supercharged by Chinese retail giants Alibaba and JD in the more recent online era -- right down to including a giant Taylor Swift concert to boot.

Thus far, efforts to internationalize the big shopping day haven't caught on -- the date is Veterans Day in the US, Armistice Day in Europe.

But in the end, it may come down to semantics and SEO: Whether you call it a Veterans Day sale, an early Black Friday sale or a Singles Day sale -- a deal's a deal, right? To that end, we're pulling together the best sales we're seeing.

OK, this one is labeled on their site as an "early Black Friday sale." But either way, it looks like you get 11% off any stationery bike, treadmill, elliptical machine or anything else in Horizon's inventory.  Offer good now through Nov.

As you can tell from the discount code, this is really a Veterans Day sale doing double duty for Singles Day. But note that Isotoner isn't just gloves -- the site offers plenty of other clothing and accessory options for men and women. Offer good now through Nov.

Jurlique has a wide range of skin care, bath soaps and body lotion products, and the boutique is leaning in to the Singles Day with 30% or more off orders of £45 and up with code GLOWING.  Offer valid now through Nov.

How Singles Day became so big in China

Like many holidays whose noncommercial origins have since been co-opted by the retail industry, however, the marketing potential of Singles Day didn't go untapped for long. In 2009, Daniel Zhang, CEO of Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba, sparked what would soon become a raging inferno of consumer demanded when he rebranded Singles Day as the 11/11 Global Shopping Festival. By slashing prices on everything from clothes and jewelry to appliances and electronics for just 24 hours -- and getting over two dozen other eretailers to do the same -- Zhang transformed Singles Day from a relatively obscure campus tradition into a revenue-generating juggernaut almost overnight.
Now, a decade later, the number of participating vendors has increased from the original 27 merchants to include over 180,000 Chinese and international brands.

Assuming the event continues its trend of double-digit year-over-year growth, this Singles Day will set yet another world record for same-day sales, possibly nearing or even exceeding the £40 billion mark.

Online Black Friday sales reached £6.22 billion in 2018, but Singles Day tallied almost £31 billion in sales.

    James Martin/CNET

By way of comparison, last year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday drove £6.22 billion and £7.8 billion in online sales respectively. Amazon doesn't disclose precise Prime Day sales figures, but the company did report that gross revenue from 2019's 48-hour event exceeded the retailer's numbers for 2018's Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. Even still, it's hard to compete with the buying power China's 1.4 billion citizens bring to Singles Day.

The biggest sale that nobody's heard of

Yet despite Single's Day status as the reigning king of single-day shopping events, remarkably few of the over 1.5 billion sales transactions processed on Singles Day originate outside of Asia. Despite the Alibaba CEO having expressed a desire in recent years to expand participation globally, western merchants and consumers haven't been quick to jump onboard.

According to Adobe Analytics, only about 24% of US retailers say they're planning to run Singles Day promotions this year.  One possible hurdle in the US at least is that Singles Day falls on an already deeply entrenched US holiday: Veterans Day. Not only do some US retailers already hold Veterans Day-themed sales, the solemnity and patriotism most Americans associate with Veterans Day don't exactly jibe with the 11/11 Global Shopping Festival's rampant consumerism and Sinocentric origins. (The same is true in Europe where the day is commemorated as Armistice Day, the end of the First World War.)

Most of the action on Black Friday is in brick-and-mortar stores, but Singles Day, like Cyber Monday, is primarily an online shopping event.

    Alina Bradford/CNET

How to find Singles Day deals in the US

That said, participation is slowly expanding, and several companies either based or doing business in the US are already advertising Singles Day-themed discounts and sales.

Unlike many merchants offering Black Friday deals, retailers offering Singles Day sales often start advertising discounted prices in advance of the day of the sale, so you can browse in the days and weeks leading up to Singles Day, then complete your purchase on Nov.

    11. Note that some of the sales hosted by retailers based in China may be limited to the 24-hour period beginning at midnight Nov.

11 Beijing time, which is 8 a.m. PT on Nov.

eBay's Brand Outlet offering 20% off

Earlier this year, eBay launched a store-within-a-store concept it's calling the Brand Outlet. It features big-name brands like Adidas, Cuisinart, Dyson, Ray-Ban and more. Now through Nov.

11, the promo code JUMBO20 will apply a 20% discount to any items added to your cart from the Brand Outlet.

AliExpress is an English-language shopping site run by the Chinese retailer Alibaba, whose CEO started the 11/11 Global Shopping Festival in 2009.

    AliExpress/Screenshot by Dale Smith/CNET

The store that started it all: AliExpress

The vast majority of Singles Day discounts available to stateside shoppers will be offered by two outlets, one of which is AliExpress, the English-language site run by Chinese retailer Alibaba. Its sale begins at midnight PT on Nov.

    11.  Aside from a few well-known manufacturers like Huawei, SanDisk and Anker, most of the brand names you'll see on AliExpress will be unfamiliar to Americans.

But if you're OK taking a chance on products made by companies with names like Yi, Bluedio, Mifa and Amazfit -- and have the patience to wait a few weeks for a shipment originating half a world away to arrive -- you can score deals like wireless earbuds for under £13, 4K action cameras for less than £32 or video doorbells under £22 -- and those are just the regular, everyday prices. Expect even deeper discounts on Singles Day.

China's biggest seller, English edition: Joybuy

China's biggest retailer,, was the second company to join with Alibaba in promoting Singles Day as the 11/11 Global Shopping Festival and is the second of the two primary catalogues offering Singles Day sales to American consumers through its English-language site Joybuy. Joybuy is sticking to Beijing time, so its sale will begin at 8 a.m.

    PT on Nov.

10 and run through 7:59 a.m. PT on Nov.

11 in the US., an English-language commerce site run by Chinese mega-retailer, is advertising Singles Day sale prices ahead of the Nov.

    11 event.

    Screenshot by Dale Smith/CNET

Compared to AliExpress, JoyBuy tends to stock a few more familiar brands, like Phillips, Whirlpool and Lenovo, and generally the merchandise available on the site seems to be of slightly higher quality, but the prices reflect this difference, skewing much closer to that of similar items available on Amazon or eBay. Singles Day discounts, however, may alter that equation, so it's worth keeping your eye on as Singles Day approaches.

Late to the game, but still a key player: Amazon

Although Amazon has set up a landing page for Singles Day that specifically mentions clothing, shoes and jewelry, the self-proclaimed "everything store" has yet to populate it with any actual Singles Day-specific deals.

Currently if you click on the Amazon Singles Day link all you'll see is a list of products "Related to items you've viewed" and "Gift ideas inspired by your shopping history," presumably this is where Amazon will highlight Singles Day deals when they become available.

Last year's Singles Day deals we may see again

    • Happy Socks: Last year offered 30% off gift boxes and free shipping on any order that included a gift box.
    • L'Occitane: Last year offered £11 beauty duos and a free 11-piece makeup set with any purchase of £111 or more.
    • Urban Outfitters: Last year offered 11% everything on the site.
    • Totokaelo: Last year offered 11% on select items.

    NASA’s charge-dissipating paint provides a potential solution to a dusty problem Sat, 09 Nov 2019 20:00:37 +0000

11 December 1972 -- Scientist-astronaut Harrison H. Schmitt collects lunar rake samples at Station 1 during the first Apollo 17 extravehicular activity (EVA) at the Taurus-Littrow landing site. Eugene A. Cernan, Apollo 17 Commander

One challenge of lunar landings is something so small you might not even think about it -- moon dust.

Despite -- or perhaps because of -- its tiny size, the fine dust that covers the moon's surface causes a range of technical problems from gumming up electronics to sticking to absolutely everything. It is even potentially harmful to the health of astronauts. Now, NASA has come up with a solution that could help alleviate the dust problem.

It has developed a new coating for use on satellite components, using a technology called atomic layer deposition to apply an extremely thin layer of indium tin oxide, which dissipates electrical charges, onto dry paint pigments. Then, the paint can be applied to satellite components to protect them from the build-up of electrical charges. To test the coating, painted wafers are being bombarded with plasma aboard the International Space Station to see how they hold up.

This technique works for components of almost any shape, and it could be applied to lunar exploration components as well. The moon's dust problem is partly caused by plasma, as it is the ultraviolet radiation from the Sun which positively charges each dust particle and makes them stick to everything. So it occurred to the researchers that their technique could be applied to moon rovers and spacesuits as well.

"We have conducted a number of studies investigating lunar dust," Bill Farrell, a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and head of an organization which studies the lunar environment, explained in a statement. "A key finding is to make the outer skin of the spacesuits and other human systems conductive or dissipative. We, in fact, have strict conductivity requirements on spacecraft due to plasma. The same ideas apply to spacesuits.

A future goal is for the technology to produce conductive skin materials, and this is currently being developed."

The research team will now build a bigger oven to create greater quantities of the charge-dissipating pigment, and then they can apply the coating to spacesuit materials for more testing.

Eventually, they may be able to apply the same coating to larger areas like rover surfaces as well.

    Great gourmet stocking stuffers under $10 Sat, 09 Nov 2019 19:53:00 +0000

    World Market

Let's face it, holiday stocking stuffers are usually an afterthought -- a hastily tossed together hodgepodge of ho-hum food items, cheap gadgets and undesirable trinkets destined to end up in the junk drawer. It's understandable. You spent all that time and money searching for the perfect big-ticket gift, why waste any more on the small stuff?

We hear you, we feel you and we're here to help.

Below, find some fun stocking stuffer ideas for the food lover in your life that won't empty out your wallet this holiday season.

Spice things up with this small yet sturdy bamboo mortar-and-pestle set. It will eliminate the need for ground grocery store spices, pulverizing whole peppercorns and fennel seeds for fresher flavor and stronger aromatics. In the process, you'll also get a nice workout and stress relief from the all-too-hectic holidays.

There's a reason this ancient food processor has stood the test of time.

That's right, the most expensive spice in the world can be had for less than a Hamilton. It's not just saffron's vibrant color and unmistakable flavor that drive up its price. The spice is notoriously tough to harvest; the flowers that produce saffron are in bloom only six weeks per year, and each flower only produces three saffron stigmas (or threads).

In other words, 170,000 flowers are required to produce a single pound. It's no surprise this particular package of real-deal Iranian saffron is about a pinch of threads -- 1 gram to be exact -- but that's plenty to take that paella, risotto or seafood stew to the next level. Stocking stuffers for foodies can be so basic, but you'll earn serious culinary cred with this gift.

The revolution is here: Plastic straws are going the way of the Styrofoam container.

There are plenty of reusable options to choose from -- but we're particularly fond of this all-encompassing set, which features four bent and four straight options in a variety of fun sizes, ensuring all your drinking needs are covered. It also includes a pair of cleaning brushes and eight silicone tips for really hot or cold beverages. These are fun stocking stuffers that are also topical.

Peeling garlic by hand and prying away those last stubborn flecks of skin is never easy -- it's always a chore, resulting in fingers that smell like Dracula's worst nightmare, and pre-peeled grocery store garlic never tastes quite right.

Enter this oh-so-simple garlic peeler. Load up to three cloves in the nifty silicone tube and roll it back and forth a few times and... boom. Fully peeled garlic that's actually fun to prep!

Great gourmet stocking stuffers under $10 Gran Gala

Hold up the tradition of gifting oranges during the holidays -- without actually sticking someone with a bulky piece of fruit.

Gran Gala is a blend of brandy and fresh orange: A lively Italian orange liqueur that can be enjoyed on the rocks or in a margarita. For sweet tooths, this airplane-size bottle offers just the right amount of sweet boozy goodness for a citrusy souffle.

Great gourmet stocking stuffers under $10 Sur la Table

If you know someone who loves wine but hates hangovers -- that's a lot of people -- here's an easy and thoughtful stocking stuffer idea. This effective, easy-to-use rubber bottle stopper provides an airtight seal that keeps bottle contents fresh.

It's great for virtually any capped container, be it booze or oil, though it's a particular asset for fans of bubbly beverages such as beer, Champagne and soda, helping to prolong carbonation.

Great gourmet stocking stuffers under $10 French Food Baskets

There's nothing more decadent than a truffle, the elusive delicacy that delights the senses of both gourmands and pigs alike. Even a light shaving of the 'shroom will set you back a very pretty penny. But this luxury salt, made in Italy by famed French truffle house Pebeyre, is the perfect way to experience the joy of truffles on any food without breaking the bank.

A light sprinkle elevates anything from steaks to French fries and is an absolute game-changer on popcorn.

Great gourmet stocking stuffers under $10 Raye's Mustard

Maine condiment king Raye's produces some of the best small batch mustard you'll ever slather on a wiener. There are plenty of varieties to choose from -- but it's hard to top Down East Schooner, a classic American yellow mustard that's been in production since 1900. It comes in multiple sizes, but the 4-ounce jar will keep you under budget.

Great gourmet stocking stuffers under $10 Macy's

These single-serving hot chocolate spoons are pure magic.

Turn a hot mug of milk into creamy cocoa in seconds with a simple dip and stir. And the results are way superior to the run-of-the-mill powdered product.

Common Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and 10 Plus problems, and how to fix them Sat, 09 Nov 2019 19:45:05 +0000

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus are two of the best phones released in 2019, with top-notch hardware, a stellar camera system, and the inclusion of the S Pen, which has made every Galaxy Note something special. But even mammoth phones of this caliber aren't perfect, and some issues are bound to pop-up from time-to-time. While bugs and problems are especially annoying on exceptionally expensive phones like the Note 10 range, thankfully, they're not without fixes and workarounds.

Here's a list of the current issues and problems that plague the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus, and how you can fix them.

    Bug: Constant "refining picture" notification

Whether the Note 10 or the larger Note 10 Plus, the camera is a strong reason to buy this year's Samsung phablet. Unfortunately, following the November update, many users are reporting a persistent notification marked "refining picture". The notification doesn't go away and hangs around until the device is restarted.

The notification may be caused by overzealous battery management that restricts the camera app from functioning in the background. If the app is closed before image processing is complete, then the notification doesn't clear away. Thankfully, this is easily fixed by turning off those particular options.

    Glitch: Signal issues

Another widespread issue with both the Note 10 and Note 10 Plus is poor signal strength.

Note 10 owners from a variety of carriers are complaining of oddly low signal strength. People have compared the number of bars with past phones and the same SIM card, and have realized the Note 10 and Note 10 Plus simply aren't getting the same number of bars -- and it seems to be hurting usability. There's a lot going on here, and it's important to note phones measure signal strength in different ways -- so three bars doesn't always represent the same signal strength on different phones.

However, it does definitely seem to be an issue for the Note 10, and it's not clear what can be done to fix it. Samsung has yet to officially address the concerns, despite complaints dating back months. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can currently do to fix this, except avoid low-signal areas.

    • It may help if you use Wi-Fi calling where available, assuming your carrier permits it.

To make sure Wi-Fi calling is enabled, go to Settings > Connections and toggle on Wi-Fi calling. If the option isn't there, you may need to contact your carrier and ask about it.

    • If you have a more serious signal issue, consider getting in touch with your carrier to find out if there's anything they can do to help.

    Issue: Phone restarts at night

Like other recent Galaxy phones, the Note 10 restarts at night by default. This restart has some benefits, helping to clean out the phone's memory and keep it running smoothly -- but what if you'd rather it didn't?

After all, having to type in a password every morning can be a real pain when you've just woken up.

Issue: Fingerprint scanner can be unlocked with an unregistered fingerprint

Here's a more serious issue and no mistake. It has been reported that Samsung's in-display fingerprint scanner can be flummoxed with a simple film screen protector. While the Galaxy S10 was the phone principally affected, the Note 10's fingerprint scanner is also likely to fall prey to the same problem.

While you think you may be safe by not having a screen protector, all a thief would have to do is apply a £2 screen protector from eBay to get access to your phone -- rather reducing the point of the biometric protection. Samsung is aware of the problem and has said it will be pushing out a software update to fix it. However, it's not out yet -- so what can you do to protect yourself?

    • At the moment, turning off the in-display fingerprint scanner as an unlock option is your only real option if you're worried about the security hole.

Head to the Settings app, then tap Lock Screen > Screen lock type. Enter your PIN, password, or pattern to confirm, then tap the switch next to Fingerprints to turn off the fingerprint scanner.

    • Take a look under Settings > Software update and tap Download and install if there's an update available.

    Problem: Bad battery life

The Note 10 and Note 10 Plus have sizeable batteries, but various elements can lead to a battery reducing faster than it should. Many users are complaining the battery lives of the Note 10 and Note 10 Plus are not living up to expectations, with battery use on standby being of particular concern. There are many reasons why a battery may not be lasting as long as it should, and if it's not a widespread issue, software and apps are usually to blame.

Samsung will likely release updates to improve battery life as the Note 10 ages, but in the meantime, there are a few ways you can improve your battery life.

    • Check which apps and services are using the most power.

Check this by going to Settings > Device care > Battery usage, and look to see if any apps are using more power than is expected.

      • You can also run Samsung's battery optimization tool here too, so give that a try.
      • If you bought your phone from a carrier, then you may find carrier bloatware is using a lot of battery power.

Most of the time you can disable bloatware, stopping it from using your battery.

    • Sometimes third-party apps can help. Naptime is highly recommended, and it speeds up Android's built-in app management services so they kick in a little faster, saving battery power by disabling background apps and services.
