Product review: Puma ProAdapt Alphacat

Puma’s PROADAPT ALPHACAT footwear checked a bunch of boxes after I put a pair to the test earlier this week. The company’s newest spikeless model for men and women crosses over that fashion aesthetic threshold to look as good with a pair of jeans as it does on the golf course. My wife even commentated how smart looking the shoe is when I wore it the other day for our daily walk.    

As well as it fits in as a potential lifestyle category product, PROADAPT ALPHACAT’s performance is ideally suited for golf. Brand ambassador Rickie Fowler, who has long preferred PUMA’s spiked offerings, thinks enough of the shoe that he plans to wear it on tour from time-to-time this season. Lexi Thompson will wear the shoe more exclusively on the LPGA Tour in 2022.

What was noteworthy from my first round with the shoe was its high degree of comfort. PUMA’s ADAPT Foam — a combination of resistant polymer and EVA cushioning — offers a high degree of impact resistance, energy return and great ground feel, making the shoe exceptional to walk in. The shoe’s upper is unique.

Similar to waffle-weave patterning, the EXO Shell is made up of an engendered mesh with a TPU film that gives the PROADAPT ALPHACAT excellent support, structure and waterproofing. I also quite like what PUMA has done at the top of the shoe with its fabric strap and additional grey padded area around the top of the Achilles and underneath the ankle. Since it doesn’t have an independent tongue for separation, I’m not exactly enamoured with how tough it can be to get this shoe on and off my feet but I appreciate how that can add to performance.

As soon as you put this shoe on and lace it up the stability is obvious. Your foot feels locked in and your confident it’s going to remain that way as you play. The multi material PROADAPT Outsole is the foundation for the product’s support.

PUMA incorporate a high-durometer, abrasion-resistant TPU perimeter that provides excellent traction on soft surfaces while a central Crystal Rubber unit offers dependable traction and a soft under foot feel on hard surfaces.

When I came of the 18th hole I made a point to jot down a couple of notes into my phone. Comfort-wise, PROADAPT ALPHACAT was as good at the end of the round as it was at the start and felt like it would be the same if I played another round that same day. In terms of stability I also noted that while the shoe’s upper could feel a bit rigid for some people I like how it never once felt sloppy or loose on the golf course.
