UK’s biggest Nike outlet store coming to popular shopping centre
McArthur Glen Designer Outlet East Midlands will soon be home to the biggest Nike outlet store in the country. The sportswear giant is moving from its current location by the car park entrance into the space formerly occupied by Gap at the Derbyshire shopping centre. Development works started yesterday (Monday, January 23) on the new store, which is set to open next winter.
It will see Nike more than double its footprint at the South Normanton complex, from 6,079 square feet to 13,959 square feet. The new development will make it the largest Nike store in McArthurGlen’s UK portfolio and lead to the creation of a number of new jobs. The announcement forms part of a multimillion-pound investment to “significantly modernise” the shopping centre, located just off the A38 and M1. The current Nike store, located at Unit 39, is set to remain open until the new shop is ready to welcome customers in winter 2023. Paul Sutton, centre manager at McArthurGlen Designer Outlet East Midlands, said: “During our 25th anniversary year, we are investing into the future modernisation and development of the centre, and at its heart, our community and customer experience.
“Over the next two years, we will see the upsizing of a brand that has been at the centre for over a decade and a key footfall driver. This new and improved Nike retail space is just the first step in our ongoing modernisation works which will take place throughout 2023 and 2024.”

American clothing chain Gap left Units 1 and 2 at the shopping centre in September 2021. The California-headquartered brand shut all 81 of its stores in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Plans were approved by Bolsover District Council for a mezzanine floor to be added to units 1 and 2 in March, last year.
The shopping complex first opened back in 1998. In other McArthurGlen Designer Outlet East Midlands news, The Perfume Shop, located next door to Superdry and Suit Direct, welcomed its first customers in December. American fashion giant Tommy Hilfiger also relocated into a bigger 4,627-square-foot unit last summer.
