Easter basket, dinner plate giveaways planned this weekend
The ninth annual Sharion Bailey Whitlock Proclamation Weekend starts today and will roll through Monday with a variety of activities. More details have been announced about the free, community Easter event, which is presented by Meet Me at the Court. The group will head out at 4:30 p.m. today to distribute Easter baskets to children in the community.
Bailey said the giveaway will cover different parts of El Dorado, noting that in one instance last year, MMC handed out baskets as they drove past a group of children who were walking along a city street. “Wherever we see children, we just ride, drive and stop. We’re just going to be all over the place,” she said.
Earlier this week, Bailey said MMC had amassed more than 100 Easter baskets and donations were still coming in. “So, I don’t know how many we’ll have by (today),” she said. “We’ll do a final count (this) morning so we’ll know exactly what we’re going out into the community with.” Inquiries have been pouring in about the event, particularly the Easter basket giveaway, said Bailey.
With inflation already high and still climbing, she said some parents have expressed concern that they may not be able to afford the popular novelty item to help celebrate the holiday this year. “I’ve had several parents say they don’t know if they’ll be able to get their child an Easter basket because the money isn’t there. We just want to bless them and make the children happy.
We want them to have a wonderful Easter,” Bailey said. For the 18-year-olds, MMC will hand out gift cards to local restaurants, sporting goods stores or other retailers. Bailey noted that the weekend event previously included an Easter egg hunt with prizes for children of all age groups.
Prizes that were awarded to older teens included a pair of Air Jordan shoes, cash or gift cards. The format of the event was changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Bailey said MMC wanted to keep older teens in mind. “The 15- and 16-year-olds have told me that they still want an Easter basket,” she said with a laugh.
MMC will hit streets with more Easter basket deliveries at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and distribution will stretch beyond El Dorado city limits and into parts of Union County. On Sunday, the group will spend the day passing out dinner plates in El Dorado. Bailey initially said that plates would come with either BBQ or fried fish with all of the fixings.
The menu has since been expanded to include beef pot roast and gravy and fried chicken, which will be accompanied by baked beans, potato salad and pound cake for dessert. To close out the weekend and celebrate the birthday of its namesake — Bailey’s late sister, who passed away at the age of 52 following an illness in 2012 — on April 3, MMC youth members will donate at least 200 goods to the Salvation Army of El Dorado’s food pantry and deliver “Love Baskets” filled with food to area residents. The group donated 200 canned goods to the SA in February and has a goal of donating 1,000 by the year’s end.
