I thought I’d save cash & upcycle a Little Tikes car – but it was a disaster

IF any parents have ever thought about buying a second hand toy in need of some TLC, you might want to think again. That’s because one mum has shared how she had “an absolute nightmare” trying to revamp a Little Tikes car she bought for a bargain on Facebook Marketplace and nearly came to regret it.

Eliza Nixon, who is mum to twins, explained how she thought she could save some cash and have a little fun, DIY project at the same time. But she soon realised it wasn’t meant to be, as she revealed all about what had happened on her TikTok account @thetwixons.  

Eliza, who works as a brow stylist, explained: “Here is something that they don’t tell you about DIY. “They make it look like it’s so easy, just a few steps and you’re done… but I am going to lift the lid on that because it is not true.” Eliza continued to tell her 24.4k followers that she had her heart set on a Little Tikes’ car for her twins’ Christmas present.

She went on: “[But] I didn’t want to spend the money on two brand new ones and I thought that there are so many on Marketplace second-hand anyway – let’s just do the Little Tikes makeover. “I thought I’d be extra creative and I wanted to do a two-colour effect. “And it was an absolute disaster.”

Eliza then showed a video of her progress, as she revealed how she’d attempted to paint the red and blue toy car white and gold – but it didn’t go to plan.  She continued: “The paint was running everywhere, it wasn’t sitting properly, even though I sanded it and I did everything that I thought was right.

“Spray paint just gets everywhere as well.” Eliza also revealed that she’d put some paint tape on the car to help her stay in the guidelines, but when she took it off, it pulled off the fresh coat and showed the red base underneath.  She added: “I couldn’t re-tape over the white because it was just going to peel off the paint.”

Revealing the extent of the problems she had, Eliza said: “I started this project just before Christmas.

“It is now after New Year’s and I’m completely defeated by this car.” However, in a sweet twist in the story, it seemed her little ones loved the car anyway. Before she’d managed to make it look how she wanted, she found the two of them sitting side by side in it – creating an adorable moment. 

As the touching footage played, Eliza concluded: “I accidentally left it outside and look what I found.

“This thing defeated me and I felt so upset I couldn’t make it perfect.

“At the end of the day, all these little babies see is the funnest new toy.

“And I forgot that’s all that really matters.”
