West Ham and Crystal Palace learn bargain price tag for Barcelona …
United States international Sergino Dest is reportedly expected to leave Barcelona this summer, with interest being shown from the Premier League. The 22-year-old made the switch to the Camp Nou from Ajax in 2020, but failed to cement his spot in the starting XI and as a result, was allowed to join AC Milan on loan this term. Dest has struggled to find his feet in Italy, too, despite impressing in the World Cup for the Netherlands, so the Rossoneri are unlikely to make his stay permanent.
Now, according to Sport, West Ham and Crystal Palace are both showing an interest in the defender ahead of a potential summer approach, while Bundesliga high-flyers Union Berlin are also in the race. The report adds that Barcelona could be willing to accept a bid in the region of EUR12m (approx. GBP11m) for Dest this summer, which is less than the EUR21m (approx.
GBP18.5m) fee they paid for him in 2020. Ironically, the Catalans also put a quite ridiculous EUR400m (approx. GBP352.9m) in the American’s contract – so it’s fair to say that the right-back hasn’t lived up to those expectations.
West Ham and Palace could battle for Dest
Dest was considered as one of the most exciting young players in Europe after shining with Ajax early in his career – making 38 appearances overall, scoring two goals and making six assists. The defender had an outstanding breakthrough season in 2019/2020, which saw him win the Ajax ‘Talent of the Year Award’ and secure a big money move to Barca early in the following campaign. However, as mentioned, Dest has struggled at both Barca and AC Milan since leaving Ajax in 2020.
He has made 72 appearances for Barca across all competitions, but Xavi’s decision to send him out on loan speaks volumes about his recent performances. For Milan, the United States international has made just one start in the Serie A this term, suggesting that manager Stefano Pioli doesn’t really trust him. Nevertheless, this has reportedly not put off West Ham and Crystal Palace, who could make a shock move for Dest this summer.
What the American will offer you is pace and creativity in attack – something that both of the London rivals have clearly lacked this season. Indeed, with both the Hammers and Palace firmly in the relegation battle, they will undoubtedly be looking to bolster their squads ahead of next season. Dest is unlikely to want to join a Championship side, though, so the strugglers will have to ensure their Premier League survival to have any chance of landing a cut-price deal for the full-back.
