After England all-rounders Sam Curran and Ben Stokes grabbed the headlines following the draft in December (they were two of the three most expensive players), the Gujarat Titans will face stiff competition if they want to defend their crown from 2022.
With the tournament back in India from 2022 after Covid-disrupted seasons in 2020 and 2021 and players keen to get accustomed to subcontinental pitches ahead of the 50-over World Cup in October, there should be plenty to keep fans absorbed. Here’s all you need to know ahead of the new season:
When does it start?
Gujarat Titans play Chennai Super Kings in the first match on Friday 31 March, starting at 3pm UK time.
Chennai Super Kings
Star players: Ben Stokes is the obvious headline name with his GBP1.6m contract, as the England Test captain prioritises the T20 franchise tournament over the ODI format, despite fears over a long-term knee injury. Elsewhere, MS Dhoni is once again captaining the side at the grand age of 41 while Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali will share spinning allrounder duties as CSK look to win back the title they claimed in 2021.
Strengths and weaknesses: The spin department looks healthy, with Mitchell Santner backing up the aforementioned finger-spinning duo. The batting could be a bit light when it comes to power-hitting, with Dhoni way past his peak and Stokes sometimes struggling to get going in this format. New Zealand’s Devon Conway might have to share the run-making burden with the experienced Ambati Rayudu.
CSK might have some big names on board, but they look like outsiders for the trophy this year. Odds: 8-1 Prediction: 9th
Delhi Capitals
Star players: With Rishabh Pant missing this year’s IPL after sustaining serious injuries in a car crash in December last year, David Warner steps up as captain.
The Aussie opener is an experienced head and with explosive fellow countryman Mitchell Marsh alongside him in the top order, as well as the improving Prithvi Shaw and big-hitting South African Rilee Roussouw, Ricky Ponting’s side have some serious firepower. Strengths and weaknesses: Ponting as coach is a real strength; he takes his role extremely seriously and is now one of the more experienced IPL coaches, having been in charge at Delhi since 2018 after a spell at Mumbai Indians. The Capitals will rely on Anrich Nortje for out-and-out pace and have Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel to provide spin.
They look to have most bases covered and should be in the mix at the sharp end of the tournament. Odds: 13-2 Prediction: 1st

Gujarat Titans
Star players: Hardik Pandya made the bold move to the new franchise for 2022 and it worked out a treat – he lifted the trophy as captain in the Titans’ debut season.
Any team with Rashid Khan will be competitive; the Afghanistan leg-spinner remains the world’s premier T20 bowler and provides some handy lower-order hitting too. Then there’s Shubman Gill, whose star is rapidly on the rise as a top-order batter for all formats. Strengths and weaknesses: The batting looks seriously deep.
With Panyda, Matthew Wade and David Miller all in the squad, the Titans have no shortage of boundary-clearing finishers, with Gill at the top and Kane Williamson, acquired in the latest draft, tasked with knitting it all together. But where’s the pace in the bowling attack? It’s a lot to ask of Ireland’s Josh Little to provide it in his maiden IPL season.
Mohammad Shami will try manfully. Odds: 13-2 Prediction: Play-offs (2nd-4th)

Kolkata Knight Riders
Star players: Stellar names are few and far between for the franchise with the smallest IPL budget going into the 2023 season, but West Indies veteran duo Sunil Narine and Andre Russell will be vital for KKR if they’re to achieve anything this year.
Narine’s mystery spin has made him one of the most prolific wicket-takers in IPL history, while Russell is capable of the sublime but lacks consistency. Strengths and weaknesses: Shreyas Iyer is a cool head as captain, although he remains an injury doubt having missed India’s recent Australia series with a back problem. He’d be a huge miss.
Without him, KKR will need the experience of Shakib Al Hasan, the legendary Bangladesh allrounder whose IPL record is admittedly modest. The batting is light but Kiwis Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee will at least spearhead a decent pace attack. Odds: 10-1
Prediction: 10th
Lucknow Super Giants
Star players: KL Rahul captains a side that also boasts Quinton De Kock, Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis. No shortage of star attractions, then, nor of boundary-hitting prowess. The Super Giants should be fun to watch.
Strengths and weaknesses: The question for LSG is: does it all gel together? They’re still new boys on the IPL scene and having finished in the play-offs last year, possess plenty of promise. Pace won’t be an issue if Mark Wood can stay fit, while the batting is strong.
They might be one world-class wrist spinner away from competing for the title, however. Odds: 15-2 Prediction: 5th
Mumbai Indians
Star players: Mumbai are the IPL’s most successful ever side and they are led by the IPL’s greatest-ever captain in Rohit Sharma who has lifted the trophy five times.
And once again, they boast an all-star cast: even without the injured Jasprit Bumrah they have the next best fast bowler in world T20 cricket in Jofra Archer who looks somewhere close to his fittest and fastest once again. And unlike the star captains of other franchises, there shouldn’t be too much pressure on Rohit to score runs, with Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green – the second most expensive player in this year’s IPL draft – providing a strong supporting cast. Strengths and weaknesses: That batting order looks seriously deep, especially when you add into the mix the likes of Tim David, Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis, some of whom might not even get a game.
Piyush Chawla leads the spin attack but there’s not a huge amount of support for the experienced leggie. Odds: 13-2 Prediction: Play-offs (2nd-4th)

Punjab Kings
Star players: It’s going to be all about Sam Curran after his eye-popping GBP1.8m move to the Kings, who have thrown their weight about in search of a star-studded squad this time around. The England allrounder may well open the batting and bowling.
He’s supported by fellow Englishman Liam Livingstone and the vastly experienced captain Shikhar Dhawan. Jonny Bairstow was drafted but will miss out as he recovers from a freak injury sustained on the golf course last year. Strengths and weaknesses: Dhawan is the master of consistency when it comes to IPL run-scoring; only Virat Kohli is ahead of him in the all-time list.
Bairstow’s powerplay hitting will be a miss but Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh should mean the Kings are covered when it comes to death bowling. Odds: 9-1 Prediction: 6th
Rajasthan Royals
Star players: In recent years it’s always been about Jos Buttler for the Royals.
Don’t expect that to change for 2023, with the England white-ball skipper ably supported by Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer in the Rajasthan batting lineup. It will be fascinating to see how much Joe Root features. He was picked up as a bargain buy in the latest draft and is determined to prove himself as a T20 batter.
Strengths and weaknesses: There’s a shortage of star names but that’s never stopped the Royals in the past. They will rely on their homegrown talents, while the experience of Ravichandran Ashwin, backed up by Adam Zampa in the spin department, is a boon. Odds: 13-2
Prediction: Play-offs (2nd-4th)

Royal Challengers Bangalore
Star players: It’s the perennial IPL question – will Virat Kohli ever win the title? The trophy has eluded the India batting icon for 15 years, all that time spent with RCB.
In the past Kohli was joined by T20 batting royalty in the shape of AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle; these days it’s Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell. Strengths and weaknesses: Du Plessis might be over the hill slightly at 38, but he’s a prolific T20 runscorer and a wily operator as captain. England’s Will Jacks is out with injury, although Josh Hazlewood is expected to feature having previously been doubtful.
Much will depend on the Aussie’s quick accuracy up front and the form of Maxwell with the bat. Odds: 13-2 Prediction: 7th
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Star players: All eyes will be on England sensation Harry Brook going into his first IPL after he fetched a whopping GBP1.3m at the draft.
He’s been experimenting with baseball training of late; let’s see how that translates back to T20 cricket. Elsewhere, the Sunrisers boast in-form South Africa keeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen – who recently smoked a 54-ball century against the West Indies – while Bhuvneshwar Kumar is always an effective wicket-taking option in the powerplay. Strengths and weaknesses: There’s a blend of youth and experience in the Sunrisers squad, though it remains to be seen whether they’ve got the balance right under new skipper Aiden Markram who will be under scrutiny.
Kumar, Marco Jansen and Umran Malik make for a balanced seam attack while it will be fascinating to see how Adil Rashid – often ignored in IPL drafts of the past – fares. They’re not fancied by the bookies. Odds: 10-1
Prediction: 8th

Since it first hit our screens in March 2000, there have been 64 series and nearly 2,000 episodes filmed at stately homes, antique fairs and centres across the UK.
Whilst the format, presenters and experts have varied throughout Bargain Hunt’s 23-year history, the hunt for relics of all shapes and sizes is one thing that has kept viewers hooked. Whilst it’s pretty common for the Reds or the Blues to lose out on antiques they thought would be big winners, some of the most unassuming items have netted huge profits for teams over the years. But what is the most expensive item to ever be sold at auction on the BBC show?
Whilst it wasn’t nabbed by a contestant during a raid of the antiques centre, one pretty piece of porcelain that nearly got thrown out gave Bargain Hunt expert Charles Hanson the thrill of his life when he slammed the gavel down and made history. Described by Hanson as the ”ultimate Bargain Hunt find”, a floral yellow teapot became the most valuable item to be sold at auction on Bargain Hunt in 2020, after someone found it in their attic. Whilst it would make a pretty addition to any table, the Burton-upon-Trent homeowner was having a lockdown clearout, and was going to throw it away.
Unbeknown to the owner, it had been hiding in his attic for half a century, having previously belonged to his grandfather, Ronald Wadsworth, who was in Japan in the 1940s. The ceremonial ewer was thousands of miles from its original place of craft, having originally been made for use by the court of Emperor Qianlong.

“This is one of only three known, one’s in a museum in Taiwan, one’s in the museum of Beijing, China, and out of humble Burton-Upon-Trent, voila!” Hanson told Bargain Hunt presenter Natasha Raskin Sharp. “Unbelievably we have another.” Hanson was very nervous prior to the auction commencing, with bids starting at GBP100,000.
After a few minutes of being stuck at the opening bid, an American bid came in at GBP105,000, eventually going head-to-head with bids from China as the ewer became more and more popular. Hanson shared that he was “relieved” when it hit the GBP250,000 mark, with the bright yellow porcelain antique eventually selling for a staggering GBP390,000. “I felt relief,” he told Raskin Sharp. “All my team and staff gave me a huge round of applause.” Faberge flowers
Another huge hitter in the auction house was a rare set of Faberge flowers, a name which usually dreams up huge profits as one of the world’s most famous luxury brands. The owner brought the unusual pair of flowers, which had been adorned in diamonds, crystal and jade, to be looked over by Charles Hanson. The recent past of The Morning Glory and The Barbary Bush Faberge Flower hadn’t been too glamorous, having been wrapped in a tea towel and stored in a shoebox for more than four decades following the death of their original owner in the 1960s.
The pretty posies were given guide prices of GBP100,000 to GBP150,000.

After bidding commenced at GBP80,000, The Morning Glory was snapped up for GBP180,000, whilst The Barbary Bush Faberge Flower sold for GBP160,000. The owner, whose family member had been given the flowers by the original owner many years ago, walked away with an incredible GBP340,000 in profit. Vampire slaying kit
Perhaps Bargain Hunt viewers anticipate seeing a pretty porcelain, like the yellow ewer, on the show, but sometimes, you have to expect the unexpected. One episode of the BBC show saw a rare 19th century vampire slaying kit, comprising of a lockable wooden box, a bible, a stake, a mallet, brass candlesticks, a crucifix, rosary beads and a pair of pistols. Ahead of the Victorian vampire slaying kit going up for grabs, there was “intense” interest all over the world from prospective bidders and media outlets.
Having been given a guide price of between GBP2,000 and GBP3,000, the gory stationary kit fetched an incredible GBP13,000 after a private British bidder won it at auction. Hanson said of the staggering sale: “It attracted strong advance bids. Nevertheless, the result exceeded all expectations.”
Tiffany ashtray
The Tiffany ashtray fetched a pretty profit at auction (Image: BBC)
It should come as no surprise that a rare ashtray by one of the world’s most famous fine jewellers generated a huge amount of profit for one Bargain Hunt team. The unusual piece was designed by American high-end retailer Tiffany and Co, who used to make ashtrays long before they made their famous necklaces, bracelets and rings. A 1930s ashtray brought into the auction room featured a striking blue edge, and was snapped up by the amateur experts for just GBP26.
This allowed them to score a huge profit of GBP184, after it sold for GBP210. Cockerel tea cosy Bargain Hunt is all about taking risks and snapping up items if you think they have even the slightest chance of winning you a big profit at auction.
And, sometimes, bidders are more keen on novelty items than opulent jewellery and watches.

After picking up their three items and crossing off their challenges, one team of bargain hunters had GBP85 to pass on to antiques expert Jonathan Pratt, who picked up a rather unusual item with the remaining money. Introducing a novelty cockerel item to his team, Pratt said: “Well, GBP85 could have bought me quite a few things, but I just had to go for it. “It’s a tea cosy.
The nice thing about it is this has actually got the age, this is from the early part of the 20th Century. “It has this sort of very soft, have a stroke, it’s very soft and a great look on it, you know. It’s probably 1930s, I suppose.”
Considering they parted with just GBP25, the team decided to go through with Pratt’s bonus buy item, which bidders went mad for in the auction room. The Daily Star reports that the crazy tea cosy raked in a staggering GBP225, something host Tim Wonnacott couldn’t quite believe.
