Burlington Department Store Coming To Edgewater Retail Strip Set …
EDGEWATER — The department store Burlington is set to move into an Edgewater retail strip undergoing a renovation, according to the area’s alderperson. The national discount clothing and home goods store is planning to open in the Broadway Plaza retail strip at 5253 N. Broadway, Ald.
Harry Osterman (48th) said. Renderings show Burlington, which previously dropped the “Coat Factory” from its name, will open in the corner storefront that was most recently home to an O’Reilly Auto Parts. The auto parts store and a Dollar Tree are among the tenants to vacate the retail strip ahead of a planned renovation.

Representatives for Burlington did not respond to a request for comment Monday. The chain already operates stores on State Street and in South Loop, Lincoln Park and Hermosa.

Chody Real Estate, which owns the Broadway Plaza, is planning to tear down and replace the single-story retail building at the corner with another retail building, Osterman previously said. The building slated for demolition previously held a Payless shoe store and North Shore Optical.
Both shops have since closed, with North Shore moving to 1217 W. Wilson Ave. The rest of the buildings in the Broadway Plaza strip mall will be overhauled.
A building permit to demolish interior walls and building systems at the retail strip was approved March 25, city records show. A venture that includes Chody Real Estate bought the strip for £7.5 million in 2016, property records show. Chody also owns the retail strip across the street on Broadway that includes a Chipotle, Petco and Starbucks.
