Driftwood Spars in Cornwall could be named UK pub of the year
The Driftwood Spars in St Agnes is Cornwall’s winner in this year’s National Pub and Bar Awards. Now it could be crowned the best in the South West or even the whole of the UK in June. A total of 94 pubs and bars have been recognised by the National Pub and Bar Awards – one in each county.
The annual awards aim to highlight the positive and inspiring work being carried out across the UK’s hospitality industry. Overjoyed pub and bar operators were informed of their achievements ahead of the grand final awards ceremony, which takes place in London on June 28. Entries for the awards have been open since the start of the year, with hundreds of venues outlining the details of their operation, summarising the work that goes into design, training, team welfare, sustainability, food, drink, marketing and many other areas.

It just goes to show what magnificent work is going on across the UK hospitality sector.
“With outrageous energy costs, recruitment shortages and a punishing taxation system, these businesses are once again facing tough times. Now, more than ever, it’s vital that people support their local pubs and bars. So, ahead of the long Easter weekend, why not check out the finest in your county?”

Its name comes from the huge beams (or spars) that comprise its structure. The spars were salvaged from shipwrecks along the coast and used to build the Driftwood in the 1650s. The building started out as a tin mining warehouse and has since been a chandlery, sail making loft and fish cellar.
It was eventually converted into a hotel and bar in the early 1900s.
