£3,000 scam MILL HALL — State police at Lamar are investigating the report of a scam, where the victim lost roughly £3,000. According to police, a 72-year-old Mill Hall woman was contacted by someone who claimed to be from the Norton Antivirus software company who told her she was going to be charged £330 for the service, and provided a phone number to call to cancel.
When the victim called the number, they told her they’d accidentally refunded her £3,300 and she would need to buy gift cards to pay for the “over payment” that she was refunded, police said. The victim bought £2,000 in Walmart gift cards and £1,000 in Target gift cards and provided the information to the suspect, police said. Police reminded the public that no legitimate company will ever require any form of payment using gift cards and urges victims to report this type of suspicious activity.
Anyone with information or who is contacted about similar scams should notify their local law enforcement agency. £200 scam BEECH CREEK — A 45-year-old Beech Creek woman was scammed out of £200 when she attempted to purchase a dog, said state police at Lamar.
According to police, the victim said she paid £200 for the dog on Feb.
28 that she did not receive, police said. Shoplifting BEECH CREEK — A 29-year-old Howard woman was cited for shoplifting at the Dollar General along Eagle Valley Road in Beech Creek Township, state police at Lamar said.
Police responded to the store on March 30 at 12:15 a.m. where staff said Arianna Figueroa had been in the store for two hours and was concealing numerous items on her person and in her purse, police said. Figueroa was found in possession of several items — Maybelline Pencil, Maybelline foundation, magnetic eyeliner and lashes and a sleep mask — valued at £27.83, police said. Figueroa was taken into custody for retail theft and later release, police said.
Charges were filed through District Judge John Maggs’ office. Two vehicle crash MILL HALL — No one was injured in a two vehicle crash along Hogan Boulevard in Bald Eagle Township on Jan.
31, state police at Lamar said. At 8:43 p.m., Gurney F. Wagner III, 65, of Mill Hall, was traveling west on the roadway when his Ford F-150XLT proceeded through a constant red signal arrow and into oncoming traffic, causing him to strike a 2013 Ford F-150XLT, driven by Ithaca R.
Phillips, 19, of Beech Creek, police said.
Phillips had been traveling south on Mill hall Road at its intersection when the crash occurred, police said.
Wagner’s vehicle sustained disabling damage and Phillips’s vehicle sustained damage to the front of its vehicle, police said.
