Why is Book Depository closing?

Amazon-owned retailer Book Depository is closing in April 2023 but why is the beloved vendor shutting its door and when exactly? Book Depository is due to close at the end of April. The UK-based online seller alerted customers via Twitter and pop-up notification on the website.

“We are sorry to let you know that Book Depository will be closing,” it reads. “From all of us at Book Depository we want to say ‘thank you’. Delivering your favourite reads to you since 2007 has been a pleasure.”

The company was originally an Amazon rival, but the multinational tech company acquired the bookseller in July 2011. Book Depository was founded in Gloucestershire and offers more than 20 million titles with free worldwide delivery.

Why is Amazon closing Book Depository?

The intenational book retailer is reportedly closing at part of cutbacks at Amazon, detailed in a January 2023 release. CEO Andy Jassy told employees that due to “uncertain economy”, a number of positions across the devices and books businesses would be eliminated. “I also shared that we weren’t done with our annual planning process and that I expected there would be more role reductions in early 2023,” Jassy continued.

The company planned to make just over 18,000 jobs redundant, but the exact figures for Book Depository are unknown. Book Depository’s closure comes over two weeks after Jassy announced the elimination of a further 9000 positions in the upcoming period, mostly in Amazon Web Services (AWS), People, Experience, and Technology (PXT) organization, advertising, and Twitch. Amazon discountinued their charity scheme, AmazonSmile, in January despite raising £400 million.

The program donated 0.5 per cent of the price of eligible purchases to the customer’s organization of choice.

When is the last order date for Book Depository?

You can still purchase your favorite reads at a discount price until 12pm BST on April 26, 2023. Book Depository will continue to deliver orders and offer support until June 23, 2023. Orders placed before April 26 will be shipped as normal, as will pre-orders released before the final date.

If Book Depository is unable to ship pre-orders before April 26, customers will be alerted and refunds will be issued.
