For generations of children, some of television’s happiest memories began with a walk down Festive Road.
From his home at 52 Festive Road, Mr Benn would make his way to the little costume shop at the end of the road, where, as if by magic, the shopkeeper appeared.A new costume, a magic door and another extraordinary adventure awaited. Whether he became a knight, a pirate, a clown, a cowboy or a spaceman, each episode carried him into a world of wonder before he returned home with a small souvenir in his pocket and a story to treasure. First broadcast on the BBC in 1971, David McKee’s gentle masterpiece turned a simple idea into something unforgettable.
Narrated by Ray Brooks, Mr Benn never needed spectacle or noise to capture our imaginations. Across just thirteen episodes, its warmth, kindness and quiet charm have endured for more than fifty years, earning its place among Britain’s most beloved children’s television programmes. For many, Mr Benn is more than a television series – it is a cherished memory of childhood itself. A reminder that adventure could be found around any corner and that, somewhere behind an ordinary door, another magical world was waiting to be discovered. Welcome back to 52 Festive Road.
